Was that the official concession speech from Mega Millions?
That the cash/annuity ratio is different for this drawing than the last one doesn't guarantee that a changing rates resulted in an inability to fund the previously advertised annuity. I'm assuming that the announce the jackpot based on expected sales and a commitment for the annuity value based on the cash expected to fund it. Do you have specific information to the contrary? Assuming they do get acommitment, that would mean that rather than having a shortfall if there had been a winner (and the

So how come MM cash values are always considerably closer to their annunity than PB
It's both the length of the annuity and the varying amount of the Powerball payments. Besides being 4 years longer, the powerball annuity pays a much smaller portion in the early years, and a much higher portion in the final years. That results in significantly more money to earn interest over the life of the annuity.
Right now the MM annuity is 135% of the cash value, while the powerball annuity is almost 160%. I don't remember the exact chronology or details, but in the past Powerball's ann

Liquor store in Passaic, NJ, sold winning Powerball ticket
So many stories in the media are claiming that this was the 6th largest jackpot ever . I don't know who came up with that, but it seems that someone made this wrong claim, and the rest of the media continues to parrot it.
For the record, it is the 8th-largest annuity jackpot, and the 7th-largest cash value.
Here are the top 10 of each:

More money with the Megamillions
The Powerball annuity is paid out more slowly than the MM annuity, so for a given amount of cash the advertised annuity is bigger.

Could anyone share the pros and cons of taking the advertised annuity vs the lump sum amount?

Kansas Powerball lottery winner claims jackpot anonymously
nc6string....compared to interest rates, the length of the annuity plays a bigger role in the value of an annuity. The longer the annuity, the lower the lump sum.
No where was this more evident then a few weeks ago when Powerball and Mega Milions each had annuity values of $15 million. The lump sum for Mega Millions (a 26 year annuity) was around $8.9 million while Powerball (a 29 year annuity) was valued at $7.1 million. Since they both fund with governemnt securities, the two games p

Wisconsin factory workers win $208M Powerball lottery
Not sure I understand the question. Anyone want what as the annuity? The question is Anyone want the payments as an annuity? The exact amount of the annuity cannot be known until competitive bids to purchase the best securities, but the lottery can come close enough for a winner to make a decision.
I think the confusion comes from the fact that everyone starts with the annuity amount (which, to be fair, is the focus amount for most lotteries and the press) and then tries to work back

Newspaper takes a hard look at the N.J. Lottery
To Demonter from Chuck32 Re: AnnuityWe do disagree on something after all . Of course the financial experts say to take the cash - they get to invest it and make some of their own cash. Actually, I have talked to dozens of experts, though usually those who write columns for newspapers giving financial advice. After they realize how the annuity is paid out (some thought it was just saved until the end of the term) and once they realize that the winner pays out nearly half of the cash amount in

Lottery money: How much gets returned?
Powerball puts 30 cents of each dollar into the jackpot...explained better in their own words... WHY HAS THE CASH JACKPOT GONE DOWN?Actually, it is the annuity jackpot that has gone UP. Most people assume that we start with the annuity. We start with the cash jackpot. In the Powerball game, thirty cents of every dollar sold goes into the cash jackpot pool. The difference between the cash jackpot and the annuity jackpot depends on how much we can make in interest earnings. The more interest that

Is a 400 million jackpot possible?
Hey ScubaSki,The difference in percentages are mainly due to the different terms of length of the Annuity that is bought with the cash pool. Megamillions has a 26 year annuity payout, while powerball has a 30 year annuity payout. So they can advertise powerball at a higher number (though lower percentage) then they would be able to a MM jackpot because the initial prize money has another four years to earn interest in the annuity. The lottery association does not actually have the 340 millio
