i can't imagine powerball reaching 500 million...
It looks like sales are about half of what they used to be, but about twice as much money goes into the jackpot from each ticket.
That means that the jackpot is growing at about the same rate it did in the past, but each advertised jackpot along the way is the result of half as many tickets as it used to be. As a long term average the number of tickets sold before there's awinner is directly related to the odds. With the current odds of 1 in 175 million there will be about 1 winning ticket fo

So why has the price for Powerball tickets gone up anyway?
The $2 Bingo scratchers were the most popular scratch-off games at the time so the lottery decided to create Lot 'O Play because it looked something like Bingo. Lot 'O Play didn't get lots of play so it was back to the drawing board.
KY has the $2 Three line Lotto where I get 3 lines and can win by matching 3 numbers on any line and/or matching any five numbers within the 3 lines. While I get lot 'o play, I don't get lot 'o winners. The game will go into the history books after two more drawi

i can't imagine powerball reaching 500 million...
When California joined Mega Millions the newspapers ran headlines of 'Possible $500 Million Dollar Jackpots.'
I think that was 2005 or so. Hasn't even been close ever since.
Going by that, with PB starting at $40M instead of MM $12M, that's not really that big of a gap.
As the jackpots get bigger play increases, so we shall see.

So why has the price for Powerball tickets gone up anyway?
Lot'O Play replaced the Ohio Super Lotto Plus which was a 6/49+1 game. At one time, it was the most popular game in the area drawing players from all the neighboring states with jackpots of $60M+. That all changed when the neighboring states got PowerBall. Also Ohio limited the amount a single ticket could win to $20M which didn't help and later did away with that rule when players stopped playing.
During the time that SLP was popular, jackpots were increased a million dollars or more after

Lottery stop loss limit=$60 annually with three playing methods starting in 2012
I no longer preach the ALL YOU NEED IS A DOLLAR AND A DREAM slogan because I like to play high jackpot games and they will cost more than $1 to play in 2012.Time is money, so we are going to pay big if we want to see those jackpots pools reaching $100 millions in the blink of an eye.I consider myself a high jackpot player even when I buy 1 quick pick ticket for a $100 millions jackpot.
$1 jackpot games like mega millions are boring to play because it takes forever to reach $100 millions. I

New Powerball payout table
Yep.... 2 bucks. I read this on the Virginia Lottery website:
Changes to Powerball will mean larger jackpots and better chances of winning. After someone wins, jackpots will start over at $40 million, double the current $20 million. The overall chances of winning any prize will improve to 1 in 31.8 from the current 1 in 35. The chances of winning the jackpot will change to 1 in 175 million from 1 in 195 million. The ticket price will increase to $2.

New Powerball payout table
The odds change slightly, since you're a tiny amount more likely to get the Powerball number, and the price doubles, but most of the prize amounts stay the same. They put the highest Powerplay multiplier on the level that's third-hardest to win, as well as quintupling the base prize at the second level, while while fixing the lowest multiplier on the levels people are most likely to win, other than the very bottom. The biggest gains are at the top (least likely) levels.
If I match 3 white ba

Here's the Thinkable Truth
Couldn't a brilliant computer hacker figure out a way to break into the lottery's computer system and make his own numbers be the winners?
I used to think the lottery was a scam, sour grapes you could say I had since I have never won anything huge, but then my sister in law's brother won 7 million in Lotto and then $13,500 in Take Five and he has won other jackpots too, but he does not discuss all his winnings, so I have no idea how much more he won. And heyyy I congratulated him on his win,

New Illinois Lottery Sweepstakes for September
Way south of those places, closer to Southeast MO.
Not sure if you're talking big winners in scratchers or jackpot games, but it seems there's a lot more form your area (duh, population) than anywhere else.
There are threads in Pick 5 for IL Little Lotto Jackpots for 2008, 2009, and 2010, and IL Lotto Jackpots in the Jackpot Games threads. If you care to, go through them and see where the winners were.

Changes coming to Powerball multi-state lottery game in January
Ha! No problem being outed (again). The research method requires a full and clear presentation of the changes and a discussion of other options in the market and many more details about how the game will play - how the jackpots will build, the average jackpots offered and won, etc. It also includes purchase modeling to try to judge how players will respond with their dollars, no matter what they say. I can only ask that players give it a chance. See how the game plays. In the end, I think they w
