That's my thought too. I've seen several winners here who got no press when they won a few hundred thousand, but when they win again even if it's just 50K it suddenly becomes news. Since I live in a non-anonymous state, that would concern me.

Instead, the impression I got is that some winners will freely volunteer info about their experience like a hey, why not? sort of thing since they figure they can remain anonymous under state law anyway. I get that lotteries want to assure the public that real people are actually winning but I see no reason why they can't set up an independent commission to verify all winners so that people can be anonymous. This day and age all you need is a name and you can go knock on the person's door.
