$344 MILLION: Mega Millions lottery jackpot skyrockets
If anything happened to you, the lottery still has to pay out the annuity, and those annuity payments would go to your estate, so your children would still get the money, whether you are alive or not to give it to them. While I'm all for taking the cash option, wanting to leave your kids your lottery winnings isn't a reason to forego the annuity. Annuity payments don't stop simply because you die. They'll be covered either way. Especially if you set up trust funds for them.

$206 MILLION: Mega Million lottery jackpot soars
This is from USAMega.com:
Why is the Powerball cash value less than Mega Millions?
You may have noticed that when Powerball and Mega Millions have the same annuity jackpot amount, the cash value for Mega Millions is higher. But from an accounting perspective, you are looking at it backwards. Most people think of the cash value as something that is calculated based on the annuity amount, but in fact the lotteries start with the cash value. The advertised annuity jackpot amount is calculated

MegaMillions advertised annuity
If you're young enough to potentially get all the annuity payments, and the yearly amount is enough that you would have more than enough money to spend and invest, why not annuity? Then you don't have to wory about losing it all in a few years. On pots over 10 MILL I take Annuity. The theory is that with cash option you can get your own Annuity But with that much money per year I'd be happy with it.

Powerball rolls to $27 million
With interest rates stabilizing it may take Powerball a bit longer to hit an annuity record, since they won't be expecting as much from the annuity. Also, for the same reason, I think Powerball's annuity jackpots will not catch up to Mega's this run, like it did last month. Powerball's annuity jackpots are more sensitive to interest rate changes than Mega's because of the differences in the way the games structure them.

Retired waitress wins millions in lottery
Ohio LOP and Mega Millions' annuities are each 26 equal payments, so in each the cash value percentage of the annuity should be the same. However, Ohio regulations fix the LOP cash value at exactly half of the annuity, while the MM cash value is a floating percentage, which right now is significantly more than 50%. BTW the PB annuity also is a floating percentage; so PB lump-sum winners are _not_ cheated, even though the cash option percentage is much lower than in MM (the PB annuity is 30 gradu

Record annuity prize
The largest US lottery prize paid as an annuity was for about $111 million to a Wisconsin couple in 1993 in Powerball. There were only a few lotto games with cash options then. Will a larger lottery prize be paid as an annuity to a winner later this year?

Annuity payments
Several games (not counting the Lose for Life variety) have the annuity paid out in 30 annual payments. Of these, Powerball's is a graduated annuity; its payments increase yearly by 4%.

Probability of a MegaMillions rollover.
I wrote: For anyone who may be interested in such a thing, the form of the equation is this C = $9,793,867*exp(0.118*N) where N is the drawing number with the reset jackpot being N = 1. To be explicit, this formula gives the cash value of the lottery, not the annuity value. The annuity value depends on many financial variables such as interest rates that I do not include in my models. I merely take a ratio of a recent claimed annuity to cash to make an annuity estimate.

Probability of a Rollover in Powerball.
The powerball jackpot has rolled over and is now predicted to be $47.8M cash or $100M annuity. On the last run for a large jackpot (the one that reached $340M annuity) there were annuity jackpots of $92M and $108M. The sales average for these two jackpots (the average value of the annuity jackpot is exactly the average of these two) was $20.6M. If the lottery sells $20.6M in tickets this time, the probability of various numbers of winners is given in the following table:086.85%112.25%20.86%30
