Couple nearly victims of lottery scam
I think deep down inside people know that they didn't win a lottery but their actions do the opposite. The human mind is complex. Scam factor is surpressed because they want it to be true so badly. So they fool themselves. They tell themselves lies. I think all kinds of red flags goes off in their minds that get buried deeper and deeper all the way to the Bank Teller.
I think it's the human thought process, greed, and need that makes these kind of scams work. But for the most part - t

Journalist faces subpoena in lawsuit over lottery scandal
An Iowa journalist who wrote a book about the lottery insider who rigged jackpots in several states has been subpoenaed to turn over notes related to his reporting.
Perry Beeman received the subpoena last week from lawyers for Larry Dawson, an Iowa jackpot winner who contends that the rigging reduced his prize by millions of dollars.
Beeman co-wrote the recent book The $80 billion Gamble with former Iowa Lottery CEO Terry Rich. It tells the story of how now-imprisoned lottery security cont

$435 MILLION: Powerball lottery jackpot on track to 17-month high
Derp mentioned a few of the many foolish lottery winners...and they all happened to be older people who blew through some or all of their winnings, some of them coming to a tragic end.
As far as I know, Jack Whittaker still has a lot of his jackpot left, but there's no denying there's something wrong with that family, at least some sort of gene that causes addictive behavior; his addiction being strip clubs and back room poker and his daughter and granddaughter's addictions being drugs, which

They could have gotten away with Lottery Scam if they sold the ticket...
On a Dumb Ways To Scam The Lottery, video on YouTube, two Crooks glued Their Number, 30 on to REAL number 2. 2 was on top of a 1 Million dollar prize. To the naked eye, it looked like 30 matched a 1 Million dollar prize. The Crooks turned in the ticket to a Lottery Clerk, expecting to get a Claim Form for a Million dollars. They forgot the Barcode would show that this was a losing ticket. The Lottery Clerk had them arrested instead for Attempted Grand Theft.
They should have sold the ti

Federal officials work to extradite Jamaican lottery scammers
I'm not seeing how any all access subscription service would prevent this scam from happening. The people who fall for the Jamaican lottery scam don't have an access issue, they have a greed and/or stupidity issue.
Someone calls them up and says they've won a lottery in Jamaica (even though most of these people have never even left the US much less gone to Jamaica). Then they're told that in order for them to collect their winnings, they most first pay the taxes owed on it. After the first p

Driven to death by phone scammers
I get some scammers on my cell phone, usually credit card scams. I've gotten the Microsoft scam at work a few times along with someone claiming to be from our IT department saying my computer is infected and they need me to do certain things to stop it. I know Microsoft won't call me and I know how our IT department handles infected PCs because something happened to me once that made me think my work PC might be infected, and they didn't handle it the way these people wanted to. In fact, I had t

Lottery scam with a twist hitting Central Texas
How would you react if you heard, Congratulations, your prize has been reserved! over the phone?
The message is part of a sophisticated phone scam plaguing Central Texas, and is responsible for stealing millions of dollars from Americans each year.
Joann Keilberg and her husband Jim almost fell for it. The Smithville, Texas, couple received a call in July from someone claiming to work for Publishers Clearing House.
I was happy, Keilburg said.
The caller said the won couple won $3.5
