Powerball lottery fever hits the USA
It takes a lump sum of money to buy the annuity, so despite any claims to the contrary the advertised annuity jackpot is based on the cash available for purchasing the annuity. There is no such thing as the cash value of the prize, and the only thing that's actually based on the annuity value is the advertising. The only record that's being broken is for the largest advertised jackpot. If the lotteries were a private enterprise they'd probably have been sued for misleading advertising a lon

Powerball Lottery Jackpot Grows to New Record of $340 Million
The cap is based on the annuity value, not the cash value, so the cap is being appropriately applied to this drawing.I think some people are just having a hard time with the fact that they changed the annuity forumla. There is no false advertising. The cash value is what it is, and the annuity is what it is. You're placing too much emphasis on the cash value, because like it or not, MUSL bases everything off the annuity value, not the cash.

$200 Million lottery jackpot has Mega Millions players' attention
You designate a beneficiary to receive the annuity payments after you die, and the survivor pays the tax on the annuity as they collect. It works the same way as a retirement annuity. I set up two for my parents, and they pay tax on just the investment income paid out in the annuity. You don't pay the tax on the entire present cash value.

Powerball Expansion.
it depends on how big an annuity period it is. the longer the annuity, the more likely that i would take the cash option. powerball is at a 30 year annuity at the moment, but now that 40 year anuities are starting to pop up, and that people are living longer, could mean a change in the annuity period again. i remember back when anuities were a mere 20 years. now look at them.

Friday $73 Million for Mega Millions
The powerball jackpot looks bigger than the MegaMillions sometimes only because of the 30 year Powerball annuity vs the 26 year annuity.Generally the cash values track one another pretty well.Few people actually choose the annuity, nor should they. The annuity value's just advertising.

Mass. Lottery needs to replace 2.2M defective scratch tickets
Cash, just because the top prizes are given out by annuity does not make the game defective . The only realistic way that a lottery can offer those larger prizes on scratch tickets is to use an annuity. For those players who don't like the idea of winning an annuity, there are many other choices for them to play. This is a fair way to handle it as, with scratch tickets, you have many choices available. Just like with MM, LS, or PB, it is fair to offer the choice of annuity or cash option as that

Taxes and fees
Never PLAY for an annuity-always choose CASH, even if on paper annuity sounds better (you lose money if you sell an annuity for cash). You can always take part of a lump sum and purchase an annuity after you receive your winnings.

Can your children inherit your annuity?
Can your children inherit your Annuity if you die before the end of the 30-year period?Do all states pay annuity funds to survivors designated in a will? What about if there is no will?I'm curious. Just so you know, I myself would choose the Cash option. :-)
