Instant Machines!
Had this happen to me yesterday. My $20 dollar Monopoly got stuck inside the machine but I got lucky and had a store clerk open it within a minute. Ticket was scratched to hell but hey it won.
Today one of my tickets came out so creased and banged up it was almost impossible to scratch. The machine had its way with the ticket I suppose.

Jackpot winner dangers!
I have had instances where I've gone to cash in tickets and they were rejected by the machine and I had to pull out the results slip and have the cashier pull the drawing up on their machine to see that the ticket was a winner. Although the amounts were only $2, I've had this happen more than once.
Even the clerks were confused because the machine kept saying the ticket was not a winner. What the clerk ended up doing was entering in the serial number of the ticket by hand and the sy

Undercover lottery investigation tests store clerks' honesty
I watched this segment on Dateline, and I was surprised they didn't mention the store clerks (and even some managers!...) scratching-off tickets they don't buy until a winning ticket is scratched that will pay for the non-winners, and they pocket the difference. This is one problem among many I have with playing scratcher games. Other irritating aspects of this type of gaming include store clerks not refilling the machines, tickets displayed on the machine that are different than the tickets dis

What's with NY Sweet Million??
Today I went to one of my favorite Lottery retailers to cash in my $40.00 SM ticket, and the girl said, New management took over today and one of the first things we did was get rid of the Lottery machine, but you can get your money at the pharmacy next door! I told her that I don't buy tickets there and I would go to another (favorite) retailer on the other side of town to cash it in and buy my NY Lotto and PB tickets for tonight. This place had a $56 million dollar NY Lotto winner last year, I

What's Your Quirky Little Superstition?
When someone is in front of you at a scratcher machine, seeing what kind of ticket they get and getting, or not getting, the same kind.

Friday night trophy! (N.J. Eve)
Yes you can play 5 numbers on a slip but the machine gives you a separate ticket for each number

Either she was very stupid or tried to commit fraud.
He argued for ten minutes that the machine is NOT wrong.
Of course the machine isn't wrong. The problem is with clerks who don't know that they've asked it the wrong question. I once had a clerk try to tell me a $1 ticket cost $2 because they hadn't cleared the machine before printing my ticket.

buying lottery tickets
Those would be great excuses had the clerk not said the machine is acting up
Would you explain that to me? The machine couldn't be confused by dirt because the clerk says it's acting up? Wouldn't that be exactly what it is doing (at least allowing a broad definition for acting up )?
As far as how such things would happen, I think it's a pretty safe bet that the terminal doesn't use optical character recognition, and has no idea whether the little boxes are marked with X's, Q's, ampersand
