California Lottery vending machine stolen and dumped on the side of the road
I do believe that there was NOT a lot of money in that vending machine. California has more lottery vending machines in more locations than any other state in the US. So it stands to reason that there was not a lot of money in the machine, just money from the people in that neighborhood. Besides most machines are now able to accept credit and debit cards so that also cuts down on a lot of cash being in them.

Mega Millions and Powerball Race
Point taken. Does the state advertise that 2nd place prize will be approximately $171,000? I've been to California a few times but I didn't pay any attention to Powerball jackpot advertising.

Mega Millions and Powerball Race
We buy our tickets in California. There the second place prize can be as low as $250,000 and as high as $7 million. Big variance.

Forgetful Maryland man doubles Powerball Double Play lottery win to $1 million
It's a good thing he didn't play that in California with their stupid pari-mutuel law. He would have to share the prize with himself.

$1.8 BILLION: Powerball jackpot now second-largest ever as ticket sales surge across the USA
* Multiple winners, like 2, California being one of them. It's disingenuous ridiculous to expect CA to pour millions into any jackpot then tell them they not invited to the party. What are people thinking, or should I say drinking!

$1.8 BILLION: Powerball jackpot now second-largest ever as ticket sales surge across the USA
Good idea. I wouldn't even have to live in California. I grew up in Nevada which doesn't have income tax, and Wyoming might be a pleasant place to live too.

$1.8 BILLION: Powerball jackpot now second-largest ever as ticket sales surge across the USA
I definitely don't agree with that take. California isn't the last place I'd want to win. It has zero state taxes on the prize, which compared to my home state would be an extra $90 million ! I would take the public notice for an extra $90M any day of the week. Then I'd move to a state with a much better government and live life to the full.

$1.8 BILLION: Powerball jackpot now second-largest ever as ticket sales surge across the USA
California is the last place anyone should want to win. They're going to blast your name all over the news and the media is going to report on everything you buy. Idaho will come after you for their taxes but you'll have bigger problems. You'll be asking for the looney bin before the year is up. They'll put your friend in jail.

$1.8 BILLION: Powerball jackpot now second-largest ever as ticket sales surge across the USA
But it would work if I snuck over to California to buy my ticket and found out I won. If I moved from Idaho to CA, got a CA driver's license and found someone to swear I was living with them in CA when I bought the ticket, I could possibly get away without paying 6% to Idaho.
