NC lottery winner spent $9M bailing out convict fiancé
From the Tax Foundation.org March '12 article in reference to the MM JP being a record 540 million : Lottery Tax Rates Vary Greatly By State
While lottery winnings of $600 or less are not reported to the IRS, winnings in excess of $5,000 are subject to a 25 percent federal withholding tax. In other words, if one person wins the jackpot and chooses the $389 million lump sum payment, $97 million will go straight to the IRS. Next April, the jackpot winner or winners can see if any of that amo

NC lottery winner spent $9M bailing out convict fiancé
I don't know, I haven't found anything about that. From what I've read, it certain seems as though the first bond could have been forfeited.
I have a hunch it wasn't, because if it were, would that same bond agency -or another - bail him out of jail the second time on the chance of losing 6 million bucks? I doubt it. (then again, with the chance to make 1.2 million plus he's being made to wear a GPS tracker, they might think it's worth risking) I've read a lot of comments by people claimin

I wouldn't presume to speak for Todd, but I would bet b/c it's an easy and free way to drive more traffic to LP. It doesn't take much time to link to an article and of course, there's no site maintenance as is here. I follow LP on FB as a show of support, plus I get the news stories in my feed and can decide if I want to come here and read them in entirety and the comments under them or not. (there are also comments under the FB posts, too) A lot of businesses use Facebook; in many cases, it's a

Michigan Mega Millions ticket worth $1 million goes unclaimed
Well said Master! Forget good causes, how about putting it back in the pot.
They claim the money is going for School Aid but that could mean teachers salaries, vacations, pensions!! Is that why there's no breakdown of where the funds will go in this article? As you can see from this chart, most of it goes to salaries. What about the kids? Only a combined 15% goes to scholarships!!
Todd, please try to get a detailed list of where this money will be spent next time we have this happen again.

Should a lottery winner invest in IRA for tax purpose?
I am reading an article on how to avoid maximum tax bracket. One good way is to invest in IRA and this can be a tax write off. So...
Let's say I won a 5 mil scratcher in CA. The inital federal tax is 25%. I can live with that. But for the rest of 15% for the tax bracket...hmm...
I would pay 1.25 mil when I receive the check, and have to pay another 0.75 mil next year. But if I invest that 0.75 mil in IRA, then do I avoid paying that for the rest of tax bracket?

Would you stop playing the lottery if you were restricted to Quick Picks?
the Michigan couple found a bias when there was a rollover and the Aussie group's bias was waiting for the jackpot to reach a certain level and finding enough stores to print all their play slips.
According an article I read the Massachusetts Inspector General said the condition with the WindFall game was known long before the Michigan couple got into the act, a group of MIT students had made as much as $8M taking advantage of that flaw going back to 2004 but the lottery commissioners did n

RJOh,
I found an article online about the Michigan couple, the corporation, and how they basically bogarted the terminals.
Do you seriously consider team play and locking up a terminal a 'system'.

Mass Lottery to announce record sales
I think that's correct. I also believe there are other states in the region that aren't far behind, Delaware and Rhode Island. I also remember reading that Mass. pays out the most in proportion to money spent. The last I read, N. Dakota was on the other end of the spectrum, spending the least per capita on the lottery. I wonder how the recent oil boom there and the availability of good-paying jobs factor into the rankings? I would think that, with a lot more discretionary income, people there wo

Man offered cop winning lottery numbers to drop DUI charge
mypiemaster, this was on a weekend afternoon though.
Regardless, four alcoholic drinks within 3 or so hours would put most folks 'strongly under the influence of alcohol,' nothing to do with lightweightedness!
Why doesn't the article mention why this poor judgement and unlucky man was ALSO charged with narcotics possession? Do any of our lotterypost.com members know this part of his saga?
