Probability of winning with multiple tickets
I too have had 'trouble' with what's being argued so passionately in this thread. When I lived in the Northeast, although I lived in New York State, I lived in close proximity to Pennsylvania. Every Fall The PA Lottery (for what I'm guessing is the last 20 years or more) holds their Millionaire Raffle. According to the raffles official rules, a maximum of 500,000 tickets can be sold. The PA Lottery has always advertised the odds for the raffle at 125,000 to 1 because there are 4 top prize w

The Florida Millionaire Raffle is back!
This just in to The Interesting to Note But Nobody Cares Department - This time around The Florida Lottery did in fact revamp this edition of The Millionaire Raffle. I think they probably copied some ideas that were instituted by The Pennsylvania Millionaire Raffle. I'm a transplant from the Northeast to Florida, and I used to live less than an hour's drive of Pennsylvania. PA has offered their version of a Millionaire Raffle every Fall for many years. I made the trip over to PA each Fall qu

The $29.95 Non-Believerz
When a game has a drawing in which each possible outcome is equally likely (such as Powerball), probability math says that.... drum roll.... each outcome is equally likely ! I don't know what stupid system you're using to predict numbers, but it is not probability mathematics. Please stop calling it that. Probability math is used to calculate the probability of an event occurring (e.g. all numbers drawn are odd numbers or the result is 1-5-7-12-14 and 5 ), or its expected value, or its v

Mega Millions and Powerball Race
P.U.!!! What stinx??? I too will get a Mil4Life ticket tomorrow Thursday one of the original two drawing days of the late Lucky 4 Life, the other being Monday. It looks as if the $5.00 MM ticket is doing poorly.
Sales are lower. But they are making more money. Do to the price increase. Just one data point, but the first 3 drawings for 400+ had sales of $105 million compared to $117 million for the first 3 drawings for 400 the last time it got there before the price increase. That's just hair under 90%. Looking at PB sales for 3 drawings at 400+ at roughly the same times the more recent run had sales of 88% of the previous sales. Again, that's a limited set of data but it looks like lower MM sal

Winner of $877,800 Idaho Cash jackpot is infamous bulk buyer
How is this any different than an investment group buying stocks to gain an advantage over time in the marketplace? Because anyone else can also buy the stock, and the investment group buying the stock doesn't reduce the value of shares owned by others. It's not rocket science. That's not true. Every ticket has the same chance of winning. In the case of the scratchers nobody else had a chance to buy the winning ticket. In the case of draw games the prize value is reduced if a bulk

That's one way to play, keep buying tickets until you have a sufficiently large chance of winning. This is what professionals do when a jackpot is really big, to the point that the expected value of a ticket is greater than its face value. But under normal circumstances, it wouldn't make any sense to buy up all the combinations when there are millions of them. You'll spend more on tickets than the jackpot. Take Pick 3 for example. It's not difficult for one person to buy 1,000 ticket
