Are you playing Mega Millions with the $5.00 per play?
Well, for me, not tonight, but I will on Friday if it rolls over today.
The 161.6 M annuity (yes I will take the annuity) is a great win. First payment of 2.4M is more than enough for 12 months. I don't see myself spending 200K a month
If I was to take the lump sum, 71.7M after all taxes is nothing to sneeze about.
So yes, I will be playing MM, but only when the jackpot gets to a certain amount (when the annuity is 100M) and only once a week, on a Friday.
My reasoning is that th

Mega Millions and Powerball Race
I don't think it has ever been unusual for the first draw or two to be underfunded, but they need to offer some minimum amount or even the addicts might stop playing. MM is gambling that $50 million is the minimum advertised jackpot that will get enough people playing, while posing a minimum risk of paying a jackpot before it's fully funded. The most recent example I see is when MM was hit on the first drawing a couple of years ago. Total sales of $19,255,000 only funded $13,759,894 of the start

$910 MILLION: Mega Millions lottery jackpot making another historic run
This is indeed interesting. My understanding has been that tax is based on residence especially for the annuity after the first payment.
I have read widely on Taxes and have wanted to know what are the best tax strategies. Unless the CPAs and CFAs are totally wrong, I don't know who to believe.
Below is an extract and a link to some articles from Tax Advisors.
@KY Floyd: let me know what your thoughts are after reading the below and the article.
From a state tax perspective, an

Nebraska Lottery marks 30th Anniversary with first $30 scratch-off game
Complaining about a top $300,000 prize for a $30 ticket only makes sense if you ignore the odds of winning the prize, plus the fact that the top prize is cash (not annuity).
In the new Nebraska game, the odds of winning the top prize are 1 in 128,000, which are pretty good odds for a scratch game top prize. (3 top prizes are available.)
For comparison, in New York $5 games offering a $1 million top prize, they are annuity payouts, meaning the top prize is not really $1 million cash in co

Cash to jackpot is running something like 71.95%
The tree top ones.

Powerball to lower jackpot starting point and increases due to plunge in sales
I also assumed they'd go back to $40M minimum and $10M increases when this is back to normal.
I suspect that at the very least they'll continue it as an experiment after things go back to normal. Assuming we'll know what and when normal is. Even when they first adopted the $40 million starting jackpot they were well short of fully funding the advertised annuity until getting through several drawings without a winner. Even skimming 50% off the top they could still have a net loss if somebody

$493 MILLION: 5th-largest Mega Millions lottery jackpot of all time
Noise-gate, Thank You for letting LP members in on my secret. The City of Fresno, The big valley in California will host this winner. What kind of reward do you want now?
I have done the math for taking the Annuity. There is only a $100 million dollar difference between the Lump Sum and the final Annuity result.
Lump sum = $186,480,000.00 Annuity Total = $290,000,000.00
Inflation and higher taxes in the future will eat up this $100 million difference over 30 years.

$380 MILLION: Massive sales push Powerball jackpot higher
Good now it can be #5 world cash record if won.
161,026,400 after 39.6% full tax rate, insane if only 1 winner/married couple wins it tonight.
I give it like coin toss chance of rolling, 50/50 with these sales.
Hell it could even beat cash value of #4 record if it rolls.
Mega Millions: $347.6 million cash, Dec. 17, 2013 ($648 million annuity)
Yet it's annuity will be hell of lot less then 648m annuity MM offered in late 2013..... all thanks to 30 year us govt bond yields being in

If you won a huge jackpot would you feel obligated to share it?
I am glad someone is speaking about giving if they win a large j/p.
Personally I can't see myself SPLITTING anything with anyone. I could see myself giving my intermediate family a few million, but not a large percentage and definitely not because I feel obligated to give them a part of the money, but because I'd want to.
This is what I feel is the best way to give them a large portion of your jackpot. As the ticket holder you have the option to do what you want to. Why give your family a
