A Message to Annuity & Cash
I know my opinion really doesn't matter but here it goes anyways:CashOnly, I agree with AnnuityisGreat that you started this whole thing. Why don't you let new members just come in here and voice their opinions first before attacking him or her with warning messages in several discussion rooms. Annuity, just cause CashOnly started this silly nonsense, you don't have to finish it. We are not in kindergarden.Annuity CashOnly: Let the people decide what payment option they want. I prefer the

NY subscription winner a LOSER
tg: No lottery winner should EVER be forced to receive annuity payments. MA doesn't fully respect the rights of lottery players. To me, annuity-only lottery prizes reek of (possible) corruption. I suppose if MA had their way, Mega Millions winners in MA would have to receive annuity payments also. MA also has many annuity-only scratch games. Here in NY there are about a half dozen annuity-only scratch games. When did those people win their annuities? Perhaps the reason why they didn't co

To Powerball-Ohio 6/49 players
The changes for Powerball effective after last night's drawing include a lengthening in the annuity from 26 to 30 payments. This is extra noteworthy to those of you familiar with the Ohio 6/49 game. While the annuity structures for Ohio 6/49 and Powerball are now the same (30 equal yearly installments), the cash option for Ohio 6/49 is currently fixed at 44% of the annuity; however, the Powerball cash option is almost _56%_ of the annuity ($20.1 cash v $36 annuity). Perhaps this is the best exam

Mega Millions vs Ohio 6/49
The reason for the disparity in cash value has to do with the annuity payment period. The annuity jackpot (the one that is most commonly referred to by the lottery) is actually calculated FROM the cash value, not the other way around. Mega Millions has more cash in the pot right now, but the 4-year shorter annuity payment period means that less interest will accrue over its shorter payment period, and hence the annuity jackpot is smaller. This also clearly illustrates the clear reasoning behi

Annuity or Cash option?
For Powerball: I play Powerball in NH and while I sometimes get asked by the clerk whether I want annuity of cash, I have read on Powerball's site that you may choose cash or annuity after the drawing. I think (not sure if it's the same in all states) that you have 60 days to pick lump sum otherwise it will default to annuity.Big Game: I play in MA and MA clerks don't ask about cash vs. annuity when you buy the ticket. According to MA's lottery site, you have 60 days to choose lump sum, or other

Why Would Anyone In Their Right Mind Choose Annuity instead of Cash Payout for Powerball?
I would take the annuity if it were that big of a jackpot because after the first year I would be set for life anyway, all the other checks would just be icing on the already big enough cake. So it would not matter. Although I highly doubt anything is going to happen to the annuity and I doubt the tax rate is going up to 90% again, that was like one time back in the 40's I think. Look how much they make from PB and how successful it has been for so long. It just keeps getting higher and more suc

Why the difference in payout between Powerball and Megamillions
CDanaT, From the Powerball website FAQ page: WHY IS THERE A DIFFERENCE BETWEEN THE CASH PAYOUTS IN THE POWERBALL AND MEGA MILLIONS GAMES? A fixed percentage of every Mega Millions and Powerball ticket sold goes into its CASH jackpot. The cash jackpot is all the money that the lottery has on hand from the sale of tickets in the game. If a player chooses the cash option, then the lottery will pay the entire cash amount to the winner (less income tax withholding amounts required by federal

UPDATE: Proposed changes to Mega Millions game will raise ticket price to $5
Cant say I wont play but will say I wont play until the jackpot is over $2 Billion. Nobody is going to win and the odds are still terrible. For $5 the odds should have been around 180,000,000 to 1. I have suggested in the past that they offer players choices on the payout. Take some in cash and some in an annuity or all in cash or all in an annuity. With the player deciding on flat vs increasing annuity and from 11,16,21,26 or 31 year payouts. The current annuity structure is discrimina

$1.23 BILLION: Powerball jackpot juggernaut keeps rolling
I wouldn't call it an adjustment, but it's not at all rare for the cash:annuity ratio to remain the same from one drawing to the next. According to the worksheets on the TX website the last two runs have consistently kept the same ratio for 3 consecutive drawings before changing for the next 3 drawings. What's unusual is a change as big as this one. The annuity estimate was increased by $70 million, while the cash value only increased by $13.8 million. We've seen mistakes in some of the reported
