Mega Millions and Powerball Race
Well I can only buy half as many cookies and no cupcakes now. I can also see why lottery sales could increase in a bad economy since more people become desperate for hope and a prayer, that cost more than twice as much now. But we're still at the beginning.

They didn't come up short. They just didn't get to skim the full 50% they normally would have. Total sales for the run were a hair over $117 million. Of the $58.5 million that goes to prizes just over 44.7% is for lower tier prizes, so they'd need about $26.2 million for the smaller prizes. Playing lotteries is about maximizing your probabilities not getting guarantees. Studying past draws is a waste of time. Each drawing is an independent random event. The only way to increase the probability of winning is to buy more tickets. That being said, if you buy an enormous number of tickets, you can increase the probability of winning a lower prize by ensuring your picks are spread out over the matrix. The downside is that if you do win a lower prize, it's less likely you'll win
