MegaMillions advertised annuity
Considering the likelyhood of future tax increases it's far smarter to take lump sum now and put the money into different trusts. Another big advantage (assuming your state allows trusts to claim the prize) is protection against lawsuits.
Even if you can't handle money yourself a trust that is set up for you would generate money for the rest of your life. I personally find the whole annuity jackpot a scam. Prizes outside the US are given as cash and the advertized jackpot is what you get a ch

$370 million!!
Well then, it will definitely have to roll tonight. We've now got a jump of $95 million from the last draw, and the same jump for a roll would take it to $465. I'd guess at the advertised jackpot starting at $475, but I can't imagine that we wouldn't see our first jackpot of half a billion.
By any reasonable accounting MM has held the record since the cash payout to the group from Anaheim 16 months ago. Even using the annuity, PB's $25 million cap on jackpot increases probably means that P

Powerball or MegaMillions which will grow to 300+million
It's done the way twisted described it, though I used slightly different numbers. The previous jackpot was advertised as $216 million with a cash value of about $127 million, so I figured a cash increase of about $32 million. I suspected the sales might have pushed it a bit higher than $127 million, but I didn't think it was worth looking up exact figures. I also just figure 30 cents of each dollar towards the jackpot.
FWIW, the Ohio lottery's website (www.ohiolottery.com) lists the cash

How high will MM go this run?
The $315 MM annuity ($185 million cash) was the highest US cash jackpot. The $363 million annuity in 2000 was only $181 million cash or so.
Anyway, I was right about the run breaking at least $200 million.
Three more rolls and the MM CASH JACKPOT may be over $200 million!!

how would YOU change the payouts?
Powerball:
I'd change the $7 payouts to $10, the $4 to $7, and the $3 to $4.
I'd also change the jackpot so if you win you can get half in cash, and half in the annuity. I know you could take all cash and do your own annuity, but there are different tax ramifications in doing that.

Cancer victim struggles to get $1 million lottery prize in lump sum
For those of you who get on me because I frequently complain about NY's annuity-only scratch games, this is exactly why I do so. Any bill introduced into legislation to give Mr Schenk the money upfront should apply to ALL lottery winners in NY state. I also think Mr Schenk should try to contact new Gov Eliot Spitzer. This has given the NY Lottery a black eye, just as with Louise Outing with MA Megabucks. NY does have a new lottery director. I seem to be encouraged by him (the NY Lottery took a s

Man with terminal illness wins 20-year annuity lottery jackpot
LOL DoubleDown. In this case, Cash Only would probably be right, except that the lottery doesn't actually have the cash advertized. It's always an annuity and the cash value is .......well, everyone here already knows. At least there should be a lump sum value when a prize is paid over 20 years. That said, we all can choose which games we want to play. The lottery can't make exceptions for any one particular person because it would be opening up that proverbial can of worms. However, maybe

One more annuity vs cash discussion
A large factor comes down to the age of the person. Taking an annuity at 80 makes no sense. Take the cash, spend it fast, and heck with the grandkids inheritance.
A younger person in their 20s, 30s, or even 40s would be better served in most cases by taking the annuity and doing their best to try to live a normal life. Even if the person simply rolled the cash not needed into bank accounts paying 4-5% per year (no risk) your money will grow by hundreds of thousands and eventually millions by

Compromising on cash/annuity
I, of course, feel the same way that, theoretically, all lottery annuities should have a cash option. Realistically, various US lotteries do not see it that way. But with all games with fixed annuities, the cash value can easily be determined. Lifetime annuities, admittedly, are a bit different.
Likewise, those who are already receiving lottery annuity payments should have a cash-out option, at any time, but, that's another ball of wax.
This is not quite pro-choice v pro-life . I think
