Do you think the Mega Millions Jackpot will get much higher??
The overall probability, as a Poisson distribution, for yesterday's sales, for a rollover was approximately 65%. There was a 28% probability of one winner, a 6% chance of 2 winners, and about 0.9% chance of 3 winners. Yesterday's sales, by the way, established a new record for sales on a thirteenth draw. The largest amount of sales ever to produce a rollover in this MM matrix was 110,612,211, on March 3, 2007. The rollover probability in that case was around 53%, slightly more probable tha

Cash Option vs Annuity
There are multiple considerations. First you would look at the amount of the jackpot, and your immediate needs. If it's a smaller amount, a few million, and you need money quickly, such as to pay debts or start a business, the annuity payments may, while helpful, still make you wait for the benefit this money can bring you. Also consider your age. If you're advanced in years and you want to spend your twilight years living high on the hog, the cash value option is better. If you're irrespo

Cash option and taxes
Well, it wasn't clear to the person that started this thread. Just because it says in the small print that it is an annuity doesn't mean it is not false advertising. Instead of advertising the anuity amount, why don't they just advertise the cash value amount? Isn't that the clearest way to state the jackpot amount? Why do you think they even decided to award the prize in an annuity. Why not just give the full amount up front? Because it sounds better to tell you the HUGE amount. It i

CA SLP: Abysmal Rollover Rate?
Let me clarify my post. The last jackpot was $33,000,000 .... $23,200,000 cash value. Current Jackpot is $34,000,000 .... $24,100,000 cash value That is $900,000 more money in actual cash. 1 year ago. The California SLP was paying out about 170% of the cash value in annuity value. Today the CA SLP is paying out 141% of the cash value in annuity value. Right now a rollover of $2,000,000 in the annuity requires $1,420,000 in real cash, whereas 1 year ago it only took $1,190,

Paying a jackpot over 26 years is too long of a time frame
In general, what makes an ad false or misleading is the claims that are made, not how believable or unbelieveable they are. Consumers are expected to have general knowledge, so an advertiser doesn't need to have disclaimers about things that are (or should be) general knowledge. Consumers aren't expected to have more specialized knowledge, so advertisers do have to provide information on some of those things. Just because most people here know about annuity values doesn't mean that's common know

$220M Mega Millions lottery jackpot advice offered
Annuity is Great too. Age is a factor. With the current mega jackpot this high it maybe better to take the Annuity. Current mega jackpot 270 mil = 10+ mil /a year/26 year. Less pressure, Money keeps coming in. control spending, keep a budget Say to moochers money tied up Less big investment mistakes( no rush to invest) (avoiding scams) ( Current stock market is bearish )( Real estate balloon has popped ) Pay less taxes I read most finanical advisors say take annuity.

Can someone help me out with my math?
Like most people I wanted to take the lump sum of any major jackpot win. I started thinking about it the other day, and thought that I was just not thinking things through and thats the last thing I want to do with that huge some of money! So, I was thinking that maybe annuity is better. I know everyone has their opinions on which one is better...but I want to know from a mathmatical point of view. (Don't worry...I understand too, that no one can give me better advice than a financial adviso

Lotteries long for 'jackpot fever'
If the jackpots don't get quite as high it's because MORE STATES ARE PLAYING and PEOPLE ARE WINNING JACKPOTS MORE OFTEN. That isn't how it works. How often the jackpots are won is and always will be a function of the odds, but probability is only a trend and there will be variations on both sides of the norm. The more people play the more money goes into the prize pool and the higher the jackpots get. More people playing means more winners, but it also means more money for prizes at the s

Missing The $200m-$300m Jackpots
Del S: No. Not at all. What I am saying is that the current run is close to the runs that produced giant jackpots. For seventh draws, the maximal amount of sales accumulated by seventh draws was about $152M. Ultimately the jackpot in that case grew to $265M, annuity. That was in March and April of this year. The minimal seventh draw accumulation in sales was $109M. That jackpot grew to $163M annuity, also this year. What I am trying to say that large jackpots, unsurprisin

Probability of a Rollover in Powerball.
The Powerball jackpot has rolled. The cash value jackpot is estimated at $34.9M, and the advertised annuity value is $75M. Note that the difference between the MM jackpot and the Powerball jackpot is 5 million in both annuity and in cash, but the cash value of powerball is lower by 5 million while the advertised annuity is higher than MM. Thus you win more money with MM, but need to beat longer odds. The number of tickets sold on 7th draws averages 16.9M. If this is the number of ti
