Transsexual lottery winner regrets paying for gender reassignment
Perhaps I read the article in a different light without interpreting any blame for the marital woes. The lottery winner made it very clear the regrets that any marital breakup curtails. I found the winner to have a decent attitude on the fact that family means alot, and that cant be bought or sold. The transgender change is what this person found necessary, and its a personal choice. Its easy to look in retrospect with some level of remorse, this is just one person willing to share that pe

Wisconsin factory workers win $208M Powerball lottery
I'd love to have $600,000 net. However, I agree that if the winners are young and have families, they will still want to keep working. So what's wrong with that? I'm not saying I could do it, but if I were 25 or 30 and smart enough not to go wild with the money, it would be better to invest it safely and let it double every 10 years and retire early. It all depends on whether or not a person needs instant gratification or can look beyond today. Even if someone continues to work for just 10 or 1

Reverse Causation
It's certainly an interesting idea, but that particular experiment is pretty trivial in the scheme of things. Besides being only a single experiment there's no way of knowing whether or not the results were actually influenced by the students. Using one photon to change the polarity of another photon faster than they can reach one another is far more intriguing, and much better evidence that much of what we believe isn't quite true. Perhaps it's also evidence that the universe in general is bala

Reverse Causation
It's just theoretical physics for the moment, backed in this case (so far as we know) by the single experiment described. Decaying atomic particles are a far-cry from lottery-draw numbers. The article didn't seem to suggest otherwise. J

Legal question?
BTW, someone earlier suggested that a person could deduct the gift tax from their own income tax at the end of the year. This is not true ... which is why it constitutes being taxed twice for the same money. For the proof, visit the IRS FAQ page on gift/estate taxes and scroll down to the question: Q: May I deduct gifts on my income tax return? http://www.irs.gov/businesses/small/article/0,,id=108139,00.html

Analysts say online gambling law a bad idea
From the article; The people who are pushing this ban in Congress ... try to argue these sites prey on children, which is totally ridiculous, he said. If your kid has access to your checking account or credit card and is making transfers to off-shore accounts across the world, Internet gambling is the least of your worries. ez

Why It Is Important to Remain Anonymous.
Hi nc, If you really did win, congratulations - and sorry about your rough time. It seems like winning a jackpot is tougher than anyone would like to think. I remember reading an article about jackpot winners a while ago - someone took a poll and found that those who won were "less happy" than the losers. If I did win now, I'd like to think I'd be more prepared to handle it than a few years ago (keep it on the DL!!!!!) in part because of what i've read here on LP. good luck.

“Broke as a chook”

Click on the link and you'll get a much happier story. I just learned that a chook is slang for chicken in Australia. Thought we weren't supposed to use fowl language on this board (nyuck, nyuck, nyuck) Oops! Must be my headache. I'm reading these posts out of order. Well at least

US House votes to kill Internet gambling
also found this........ Gamblers' fears might be unwarranted Internet gamblers worried about losing their hobby may take comfort from this golden nugget of information. Those who advise Internet gambling investors don't seem worried at all. London-based financial analysts see Tuesday's vote by the U.S. House of Representatives to ban Internet gambling as much ado about nothing, according to Reuters. That's because analysts don't expect the U.S. Senate to act on the bil

US House votes to kill Internet gambling
However, the lottery exemption wasn't in the bill back in 2000. If it had been, Abramoff's client probably would have backed the bill. Online lotteries are exempted this time around at the behest of states. Taken from the article at the beginning of this thread ez
