Probabilty of Someone Winning a PB & MM Jackpot in the same Week!
The odds of winning if one buys two tickets are cut in half. Whether those two tickets are purchased for the same or different drawings makes no difference, the odds are cut in half. Just as the odds are the odds, the mathematics are the mathematics. As was pointed out, 2::10,000,000 is the same as 1::5,000,000. That's math.
The possible confusion here is with possibilities (and odds) vs. probabilities - they're two different ball games. Let's take a 1/10 lottery matrix, for example - draw 1

AMAZING: Minnesota man wins back-to-back lottery jackpots
Calculating odds is a d iverting pastime, and most of us do it. But in the end, it appears that if you are meant to hit, you will, and the odds mean nothing. Even with the 142 million to one PB odds, someone will eventually beat those odds and hit it.
Therefore, I look more at how much I'm spending than what the odds are that I will hit.

Lotteries long for 'jackpot fever'
I don't think that raising the odds will encourage people to play, I think that larger jackpots will. Yeah there will be a waiting period, but it is also likely that the jackpot will remain larger longer, and despite the odds, if there is a 400 or 500 million dollar jackpot out there, people will be more likely to at least buy 1 ticket. My point is that for better odds and smaller jackpots, I play my local lottery, but I'll only fork over the money for the megamillions when their are mega jack

Odds 101
I figured that was what prompted this thread, but I didn't see anyone saying odds and combinations are different things. There was plenty of confusion about how to figure out the probability for any given number of combinations, and confusion about the technical difference between odds and probability. As near as I can tell, though, everybody but you was talking about the odds (or probability) of an event happening, not the odds somebody will give you for paying out if that event occurs. That's

Back to Basics (Dice)
When I look at your previous results, I am confident that your next number will be a repeat of one of the earlier rolls. The odds of a correct guess with no formula is 1:6, however with more observations one probably could reduce those odds to 1:4 or a 50% improvement. Over a short period of time even in a random environment, certain outcomes will appear to be favored and it's those types of treads that the system lottery players are looking for. By elimination the results that are least likely

Breakfast buddies file suit over lottery ticket
RickG - like you were stating in your 10 digit example. That is right. If you play 1 number, then you have a 1/10 chance or 10%. Your odds are 1:10 of winning. The percentage is calculated by dividing the number you have by the number of overall chances. When you play two, then your odds go down to 1/5 or 2/10, meaning you have a 20% chance of winning and an 80% chance of losing. When you are playing the 175 million that you are talking about, and you play 10 sets of numbers, then your chances ar

Breakfast buddies file suit over lottery ticket
I have seen several posts which say about odds of winning when you buy many tickets and some of which seems to be not correct as far as odds/probability/math are concerned. The concept of odds/prabability is a simple one. When it says odds of 1 in 175 million what it actually means that there are 175 million combinations of winning numbers possible and if you get 1 you have a chance of 1 in 175 million. But if you get 10 differant sets of numbers(tickets) you have a chance of 10 in 175 million i

Im done with Powerball...
Perhaps you could take a few dollars from your Pick-3 winnings and use that to play a little PowerBall.Remember, the 1 in 164.1 Million odds are for the jackpot. The odds of matching 5 of 5 ($200k) are approximately 1 in 3.6 Million and the odds of matching 4 of 5 + PB ($10k) are 1 in 584,432. While it's certainly true that those odds are still pretty high, they're much lower than the odds of winning the jackpot. As for me, I favor the Pick-5 games and put most of my lottery budget towards those

New To The Board - Hi
If I were playing Florida's Fantasy Five, the odds are 1 in 376,000. If I played $500.00, my odds of hitting the Jackpot would be 1 in 752.If you're playing a Game that's 1 in 500,000, a bet of $500.00, the odds of hitting would be 1 in 1000.What happened to you with a 126 numbers was a fluke. Just like this past May when I played my birthday, month and day....520, in the cash-3 daily game. Sure enough I won $500.00 on my birthday. A nice birthday present, but it was a fluke as RJOH said. You,
