Judge rules thief keeps lottery jackpot
And the article goes on to say He violated probation again by committing another unarmed robbery in January 2006 and received a revised five-year probation. I don't know the Massachusetts criminal code so I don't know why the judge gave Elliott probation if he pleaded guilty to armed robbery and larceny the first time. But logic and common sense would certainly dictate that the judge throw the book at him for robbing another bank while on probation. Since he was only given additional 5 yea

Lottery ticket worth $200,000 expired
Sorry, ScaryChick. You are right. I guess I read the article too quickly. They are getting 2 extra days too. There was a story on LP about a couple in Colorado who saw the news and validated a winning ticket the night it was going to expire, so it can happen. I think they got to the store at 11PM. I always thought a ticket had to be claimed at a Lottery Office by the expiration date, but I guess in some states it just has to be validated by a retailer. Any comments on this? Winne

Anybody Ever Win?
Thanks, Todd. I think ezmoney was smart if that's the way he/she felt. I would probably continue to play unless I won at least a million. Anyway, I do have a question. I notice that some tickets posted show numbers circled. Is this a wise thing to do? I guess only the bar code really counts, but I thought that lottery tickets shouldn't be tampered with, including writing on them (except for signing the back) Just curious. By the way, I was looking for information and found an old a

Which charity would you support?
I think this is a very personal question. There are many great charities for both people and animals that need our support and you don't need to be wealthy to help a little. Having billions just means you can do so much more. From an article about the Hilton foundation: More than 50 percent of the money funds international initiatives such as sanitation and water systems in developing countries; housing for mentally ill homeless people and homeless mothers and children in the United St

Randomness of the lottery
In a N.Y. newspaper, an article stated that very thing. When an official was asked why they performed pre-tests and rotation, he said...."To eliminate as much possibility of a pattern emerging". What this official doesn't seem to get is that such procedures will have little overall effect if one is looking for patterns not necessarily visible. One example is to take lottery numbers from certain dates in each month from within the past several years, say the 1st, 10th, and 20th then pu

Most lottery players never see big payoff
When I started my 401(k) I was making about $500 a week and had 10% ($50) deducted from my paycheck, but the difference in my take home pay was less than $50 because my tax base was lowered to $450. The plan allowed me to invest in almost any stock in the three major stock markets plus a large number of mutual funds. Money market funds were the safest investment but their yields were usually lower than the stocks offering dividends. I read an article by Warren Buffett that simply suggeste

Most lottery players never see big payoff
Didn't this article come out last week in The Daily Obvious? State Rep. John Scott, R-Richland, said people take equally risky chances all the time. It's the same choice you make if you want to use alcoholic beverages - you don't have to do it, Scott said. You've got a 401(k)? You're gambling. Got stocks? You're gambling. Spoken like a true politician, who's either putting a hell of a lot of spin on his position, or doesn't have a clue about reality. Sure, people lose mone

Robert Serotic Lottery Strategy books
Harvard Square sent me the Pick-3 and Pick-4 Number Blasters and if I ran a lottery, I would give them to all my customers. You enter all 10 digits starting with the most favored and if the number drawn has 3 different digits, you're guaranteed 2 out of 3 and 3 out of 4. In 72% of the Pick-3 drawings, players can say, had I enter the digits a certain way , I would have won. The Pick-3 Blaster has 10 combos and the Pick-4 has 18. One of the Harvard Square professors, Alan Reiss was a contributor

N.D. Lottery wrestles with credit card buying options
Re: Snow in North Dakota, think of the movie Fargo, yah? I get the daily e-mail list of winners for the Pick 5 game in Illinois (there's a drawing every night) and in three years of getting it I've seen two subscription jackpot winners. The question about the matrix changing brings up a good point- if the ticket was considered still good, the player's chances are reduced even more. I wonder what would happen in such a situation. Of course, from the tone of the article in the OP, i

Georgia lawmakers question lottery bonuses
I wish the article contained more information...I seem to remember everyone at the lottery, all the way down to the janitor, getting (or being eligible for) some sort of bonus. I don't know what Margaret is making total but she seems to have done a pretty good job down there. $3 million is less than 1/10 of 1 percent of sales...compare with the average US Corporation and its a drop in the bucket. A lot of publicly traded firms go by an estimate that says the management team should be get
