Idaho woman hits fifth lottery jackpot in five years
Jarasan started a thread asking what we consider to be a jackpot and I thought of this news article when I read it. Did she win a jackpot 5 times? Yes, but what did the total add up to after years of playing? Hey, this lady is awfully lucky and I'd love to win even the one prize of $15,000 to catch up, but her 5 jackpots don't add up to one Fantasy 5 jackpot, and certainly not a Lotto win. Captain Lotto is absolutely right. Many of our members dream about hitting $100M in PB or MM but many

Hope, Optimism or Stupidity?
KY Floyd writes: Raising the cost of your tickets is never the smart choice. Did I say I spent $2 on the same ticket? That wouldn't make sense playing a jackpot game. Where did you get that? I wrote that I bought 2 tickets for Fantasy 5 and 2 tickets for MegaMoney. I thought you always insist that buying an extra ticket cuts the odds in half! I disagree that spending an extra few dollars on a trip to the grocery store is meaningless. Maybe it is to you, but one of my nei

Britain's biggest lottery winner says jackpot ruined her life
The first thing most advisors say when you come into a large sum of money is to not make any large changes in your life. It appears to me that that is exactly what she is trying to do. I give her credit for not going on a spending spree. The article states that she was given advise by financial experts and I think she took it to heart. No new cars, houses or clothes. Good for her, once things settle down she will have plenty of time to decide what to buy. It is the media that is trying to ma

The prediction software you've been waiting for?
I still don't understand why they will spend more money trying to predict everything with the earth simulator (the Earth basically) and less on something that will predict absolutely everything, when predicting absolutely everything is more complex than the job the Earth Simulator has... They are not predicting everything , the software goal is to predict group behavior (a finite set of actions) under various civil unrest circumstances (varied, but still finite). The full article explains

The prediction software you've been waiting for?
The original article is an example of a sensational headline followed by little else. Groups of people respond to a given stimuli in a small finite number of ways, not millions of possible outcomes like lotto results. That is a totally different kind of unpredictable . This is why there are more computer programs that can beat a human at a complex game like chess , than at a simple game like go . The two require very different types of thinking. The professor has pulled off a nic

Nun hoped to win lottery
Interesting story. She lived a long life. Regarding the link, here is one person who won praying to win money to give to the Catholic church and as she stated, to stop abortion, and another winner (if you remember Bunky) prayed to win enough to quit working so he could spend his time teaching Wicca. I think it's wonderful to want to help your church or synogogue, or feel passionate about a cause, but I believe these people won simply because they were lucky enough to pick the winning ticke

Record powerball lottery winner reflects on sad life
I don't necessarily feel sorry for him either, based on some of his behavior. You point out he got robbed a few times in front of a strip club, but he also had hundreds of thousands in cash in his vehicle. Who keeps that much money in cash in their car? Not a smart thing to do. I also read an interview with him, I wish I could find it, where he basically said he could tell everyone to kiss off. It's referenced in the Wikipedia article about him. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jack_Whitt

Record powerball lottery winner reflects on sad life
No. Common sense vanished when folks started listening to one-sided views of reality and stopped checking out things for themselves (or applying a little common sense). The McDonald's case is a good example. Did you know that this store intentionally prepared the coffee to such an extreme temperature that no rational person would even think about taking it into their car if they knew about it; that the store had been repeatedly warned about it. Did you know that this woman did not just burn
