$300 MILLION: Massive Powerball jackpot fuels New Year's dreams
For any given advertised prize sales vary a bit for Wednesday or Saturday drawings, so that may explain some of it. Still, I thought from the start that the increase to 300 was a bit optimistic. Maybe a calculated risk, since the psychological value of advertising 300 instead of 295 is worth more than just the real difference of $5 million. Accepting the $300 million figure as realistic I was guessing conservatively that the progression might be along the lines of 300, 340, 400, 500, 650, 850

Monopoly Millionaires game
Hello LottoMetro, As a CPA, I appreciate the detailed explanation of the odds on the MMC game. From a practical perspective, I do not foresee the ticket sales doubling anytime soon (the lotto operators at the stores still don't even know what I am talking about every time I try to buy a ticket for this game). I think we are most likely going to see a gradual increase in ticket sales (~100,000 per rollover) until the number of millionaire winners exceeds the 30 range and people really become i

Are Mega Millions sales really that bad now?
If the subject isn't clear enough, the discussion is about whether or not MM sales are worse than they used to be. Changes to the game may explain why sales are different, but they're irrelevant to whether or not there is a difference. Offering tickets to 50 or 100% more potential customers should increase sales regardless of the quality of the product, so sales should obviously be higher than they were when far fewer states sold the game. If nothing else resulted in less player interest in buyi

Buying More Tickets Does Not Increase Your Odds.
BUYING MORE TICKETS DOES NOT INCREASE YOUR ODDS. Neither does going in as a group. if you buy 1 ticket and hypothetically it's 1:5billion. if you buy 5, it is no longer 1:5billion, you've added 5 tickets to the equation. statistically speaking, you gain no advantage over buying more than one ticket. But if there are 100 people playing and you are one of them (99+1), that isn't the same combination if you buy two tickets, because now there are 101 people (99+2). with the large numbers

Powerball multi-state lottery to raise prices, jackpots
By Todd Northrop, with AP wire sources Powerball lottery organizers are betting that bigger jackpots will entice more people to play, but gamblers are going to have to dig deeper into their wallets to try their luck. Game changes that have been in the works for months perhaps years are finally going into effect this month. (See Changes coming to Powerball multi-state lottery game in January, Lottery Post, Jun. 27, 2011.) Tickets for the multi-state game are doubling in price to $2 be

Tenn. lawmakers float ideas to improve lottery revenues
I really, really hope he's not talking about the Lottery Commision. The TN lottery is still making a profit, but the scholarships fund where the profits go is spending more. Instead of balancing the fund, the Governor and legislators want the lottery to make higher profits. They get elected by making promises and when when they can't keep their promises, they blame someone else. The lottery was created on the promise the profits will give TN kids scholarships, but the demand for scholarship

Tonight's Fla. Lotto drawing first to let players increase jackpot
Also first drawing to use new playslips Lotto players who buy their tickets on the day of the drawing need to give themselves a few extra minutes to get tickets for tonight's drawing. Tonight's is the first drawing since the Florida Lottery made changes to Lotto and the old play slips no longer work. The big change is that players can spend $1 or $2 extra to increase the size of the Lotto jackpot. Tonight's jackpot is $3 million and a $1 play buys a chance to win that amount or a cha

Reducing Lottery Rewards
Some Florida legislators figure that the way to sell more lottery tickets is to reduce the size or number of prizes the players can win. It's something that will be attempted during the 2004 session that begins in March -- and, given the financial philosophy of this Legislature, it has a good chance of passage. This is, after all, the same Legislature that set in motion the largest telephone rate hike in state history using the logic that if rates were increased, there would be more competition f

Are you playing Mega Millions with the $5.00 per play?
they've got it wrong. greed has made them blind to the fact that this kind of games would need widest participation. 1-return money back to the public by cutting down the 60% tax to 40% 2-I agree to bring back a dollar and a dream (increase the second tier prize to $2 million from the 60% tax reduction). ========================================/ The price increase of Mega Millions tickets from $2 to $5 was decided by the Mega Millions Consortium , which is the governing body of t

$1.8 BILLION: Powerball jackpot now second-largest ever as ticket sales surge across the USA
I hope no one wins tomorrow so the record gets broken! I've been waiting along time for that, but the real record is something north of $997.6 million in cash. To get there we need an annuity of $2.173 billion or so (assuming the interest rate doesn't change). I think we should be at the point where sales for Monday should at least be almost as big as Saturday's, and that's what we saw last Monday. If we see 1.844 tonight that's an even $400 million more than Wednesday, so we'd need an incr
