Scammers using social media accounts claiming to be lottery winner Mavis Wanczyk
The $758 million jackpot was based on an annuity, but the winner took the cash value. By law State and Federal taxes are deducted from the cash value and there is nothing an army of financial advisers/lawyers can do to prevent that.

If I was ever so lucky..... I'd take the lump sum simply due to my age. (I'm a semi-retired Old Fool) I probably won't live long enough to see the back end of a twenty year annuity.
My wife is seven years younger than me, (and is still working - she's too young to collect her Soc. Security) so I thought about having her claim it (if I was ever so lucky) and taking the annuity. That way she'd keep collecting $$$ even after I'd gone to That Big Gamblin' Casino in The Sky. But considering what i

Wed. Powerball lottery jackpot jumps to $700 million
While Gloria held the annuity record for a single winner she was second to last years MM winner in July in actual cash winnings. The MM winner received 378 mill and Gloria 370.9 mill. Gloria is from Fl which has no state tax on lottery winnings while the MM winner was from Indiana i think which does tax lottery winnings so in that case Gloria would come out ahead. I doubt if either Gloria or the MM winner are all that upset about having there record beat though

Massachusetts woman wastes no time claiming $758.7 million Powerball lottery jackpot
While there are instances of lottery winners hitting it big and going public with few problems, it still seems overly risky to win so much money without taking extreme precautions.
Alternatively, one can avoid much of these issues by playing smaller. Jackpots under $100 million annuity still get some attention, but far less than in the past while those under $25 million annuity barely get a mention, especially if the winner takes the reduced cash option.
And winning 2nd place (ie. $2 milli

Is the annuity really worth if anyone does hit?
annuity if the state/game allows you to assign the precedes to a third party, like a bank or insurance company, then you borrow against it and let them worry if it's going to pay over the 30 years or not. you get more precedes and there are tax advantages too

Pay attention to the CASH VALUE. Look at the JP/CV charts. $656m greater than $700m annuity. 2012 must have been a good year. Let it bounce MO MONEY!.

Hot Lotto replacement "Lotto America" rolls out in November
Good luck with the new game HW. Yes the all cash and taxes paid jackpots would have been nice, but this one will be annuity with a reduced, not tax free cash option.

But what about the ticket I bought this morning stating the value at $340.1 mil (TX requires you to chose annuity or CO at purchase)? Has this ever happened before?

$535 MILLION: Huge Powerball sales sparks early jackpot increase
Still far short of the record $1,586 million annuity; nearly $1 billion cash. It's amazing to think back how it ever got that high. Will it happen again. Time will tell. Likely take 3 more roll-overs to break the record: next $900 million, then 1.5 billion, and then $2+ billion.
