So if he chose the annuity, how much would be the total payout after taxes?

Powerball jackpot rollover
The annuity at draw time was $270.3 million so $280 million is almost a $10 million increase.-weshar75
It's only an increase of almost $10 million if the annuity on Monday night really turns out to be $280 million, but 280 is still only $2 million more than the 278 that they advertised. There are two possibilities for the actual size of the annuity on Saturday night. One possibility is that sales met the forecast but the annuity value was reported based applying a new, lower interest rate t

Powerball jackpot rollover
Gotta admit you were right. Annuity is $280 million. The cash is about 73%, which is higher than previous. It is the cash value that determines the annuity. That's why I never really pay attention to what the advertised annuity is.

Powerball jackpot rollover
Ok. I never even bother with that page. It is only an estimate, because they can't say for sure what it will be if it rolls. Recent history shows that the annuity will go up $8-$11 million if it rolls. And the cash value which is the real jackpot because that is the amount used to buy the annuity has been about 70.5% of the annuity.

Powerball jackpot rollover
The cash value has been about 70.5% of the annuity for the last couple of months. I didn't go back farther than that. With each rollover the annuity has gone up around $8-$11 million. How do you figure the annuity will only go up $2 million?

I don't get why there isn't an option to do half Lump sum and half Annuity...:/
I feel that Lottery should allow say a 500 million Lottery Winner to get 250 Million in a Lump Sum and 250 Million in an Annuity before Taxes and fees(The take home Winning is about 167 Million after Taxes and Fees on a 250 Million win, so $334 Million take home Winnings together, ;) ) I feel this would be the best way....

$600 MILLION: Mega Millions jackpot soars after no winner Friday
Calculating the cash value as a fraction of the annuity is like a dog chasing its tail. It's the cash value that the lottery starts with, and then it calculates the annuity based on prevailing interest rates. If you simply look at the increase in cash value and ignore the annuity you will have a much better sense of how fast the jackpot is growing.

Current Jackpots...
What Todd and USA Mega said pertaining to the lump sum being the real cash value, and the following from the MM and PB websites:
Mega Millions: The Mega Millions annuity is paid out as one immediate payment followed by 29 annual payments (30 total). Each payment is 5% bigger than the previous one. This helps protect winners lifestyle and purchasing power in periods of inflation. For a typical jackpot of $100 million, the initial payment would be about $1.5 million, and future annual payments

Lump Sum Or Annuity? :)
No doubt a players age at the time of their huge win is a significant factor in deciding whether or not to take the lump sum or annuity.
That said, while it does seem as if a young player would be smart to take the annuity, tomorrow is not promised to anyone. So there is that to think about too. I hope it's never happened, but what if a young person with no heirs gets a windfall only to tragically pass away a short time later? But I dont think the fact that a young person could die soon after
