Prosecution calling last witnesses for $5M lottery theft trial
Prosecutor Beth Van Doren has called 11 out of 15 potential witnesses to the stand in the Onondaga County Court trial of two brothers accused of stealing a winning $5 million lottery ticket.
The bench trial before Judge Joseph Fahey began Monday and resumes this morning. Thursday, Van Doren questioned several co-workers of Robert Miles, a maintenance worker who claims he is the real winner of the $5 million.
Miles alleges that Andy Ashkar, who is charged with criminal possession of stolen

Five trillion to one! Punter scoops second lottery win with the same numbers By David Wilkes
THE odds against being so lucky were mind-boggling - more than five trillion to one.
But yesterday, punter Mike McDermott was planning retirement to the sunshine island of his dreams after winning the lottery for the second time with the same numbers.

Baltimore man, 81, loses his home after falling for lottery scam
The first caller told Norman Breidenbaugh he had won $2.5 million in a foreign sweepstakes, but there was a catch: Breidenbaugh needed to send $2,000 in fees before collecting his earnings.
Other calls followed, promising Breidenbaugh millions more even a Mercedes Benz as long as he would wire some money to pay taxes on the prizes. He obliged, sending more than $400,000 over about six years, hoping the promised winnings would cover his wife's medical expenses.
The prizes never came. The pe

Mathematics and the Lottery
Didn't read recent comments, so don't know how offtopic it's become,
BUT

The question, as it is stated, along with the choices in the poll is actually very easily answered.
The fact is, lotteries were created to win money for the house, and not for the players. That's how they were designed, and that's how they work. There is simply
no way to create a system that will consistently beat the lottery.
Why? What if someone discovers some

Post The Coincidences You Witnessed.
I got my master's degree at the University of Georgia (I actually joined this site while I was studying there). Of course, with Georgia being an SEC school, football is very important to the Athenians of Georgia. Every once in a while, an event before or during a game almost seemed to point to the direction in which the game would go. So, I called these events omens. Here are some of the more notable ones.

NY brothers charged in plot to steal $5M New York Lottery ticket
They waited until shortly before the $5 million winning ticket in a scratch-off lottery game would have been worthless. Then, when two brothers from the Syracuse area went to claim the prize, they made an unusual offer: They told state lottery officials that they would be happy to take home less than the full amount if they could avoid a news conference.
(See NY brothers claim $5M win from '06 lottery ticket, Lottery Post, Oct. 17, 2012.)
The officials made them wait some more, saying a se
