Has anyone noticed the change?
Meatman wrote: Why not keep it at the past 62% and just lower the annuity amount? The interest rate is the IRR of the returns from a ladder of investments over 29 years (30 payments, the first being immediate) that return the required annual payments. The actual rate of return of each step of the ladder might vary; the IRR is the average rate of return. The required annual payment increases 5% each year. From this, the MUSL calculates an annuity factor (AF). In Excel: =FV(5%,30,-1,

its the time value of money. ie interest rates. if the interest rates where as high as %6 then the cash could be lower. this will get interesting when they go to negative interest rates, thus making the cash value higher than the annuity!

How soon till the next $ Billion $ Jackpot?
I watched the drawing footage on the powerball website for the last two draws and each time they failed to reach the advertised annuity. So I think it may take longer to get to a billion if it even does at all. I got a couple of tickets for wednesday night and would settle for that jackpot.-weshar75

How soon till the next $ Billion $ Jackpot?
UPDATE: No winner in Saturday's 2/13/16 Powerball drawing for $176 mil. The annuity jackpot was increased $13 mil from $176 mil. $189 mil. The cash jackpot was increased $12.1 mil from $114.1 mil. to $126.2 mil. When I started this post, the jackpot rollovers were happening at a higher percentage / dollar amount as they are now. If there continues to be no winner and the annuity jackpot grows at the current rate, it should take a bit longer than I originally expected to reach the $1 b

How soon till the next $ Billion $ Jackpot?
Either way you look at it, the percentage of increase in either cash value or annuity has decreased (compared to previous draws). Previous draw dates have resulted in the jackpot being increased by between approximately 19.1% and 28.2% This current drawing's annuity jackpot was increased $21 mil from $136 mil to $157 mil, a 1.1544% increase. The cash value increased $13.9 mil from $87.8 mil to $101.7 mil, a 1.1583% increase. The point I was trying to make in my last post, is that with a

Why do jackpot winners feel the need for an attorney or financial adviser?
Better watch for waiting too long to claim. In Illinois, you have to claim within 60 days of the drawing to choose the cash option. After that it's annuity only.

Va. grocery store worker's lottery ticket mistake turns into $7 million grand prize
The biggest argument for taking the cash is trust. Do you trust that the prize will actually be paid out over your lifetime? Keep in mind you are dealing with a government entity. For instance, just last summer/fall the state of Illinois stopped paying out on winning lottery tickets and presumably annuity checks for past winners due to a budget impasse. What happens to you if for some reason the check doesn't show up on time? Another consideration is taxes. They could go up or they could go d

If you were a Lucky For Life winner...
Agreed, the lifetime annuity makes sense for under-40s. But at my age, lump sum it would be. But we don't have the game here yet.

If you were a Lucky For Life winner...
I would consult with a tax accountant and an attorney. Even though I am a shade over 40, I believe I am not even half way through my life span...so I would be inclined to take the annuity and never, ever vote for any Democrat politician. However, if Hillbill or Bernie are elected this year, I would take the lump sum and run to Singapore!
