$800 MILLION: Powerball lottery jackpot approaches billion-dollar range
$496M is what they'll pay to get the $800M 30-year annuity. If you take the cash option they'll take out the 25% for the feds and whatever your state requires, meaning the actual payment you receive will be $372M or less (and you'll still owe more taxes on that beyond what was withheld, so don't spend it all at once.)

cash or anuity and what is the taxes % depending on the states
Cash. If you invest $200 mil, with a modest 10% return compounded over the same time frame as the annuity, you'd end up with more money. The trick is getting a 10% return each year.

Strategy
South Carolina is one of the few states that allow a jackpot to be claimed anonymously. And, with an annuity jackpot only slightly south of $1 billion, if ever there is a time this is an advantage, it is now!

$700 MILLION: Powerball lottery jackpot raised just hours after initial estimate
The same thing could happen with the annuity, it is dependent on investments to grow. 30 years is a long time. The way things are going now you take the money and run.

$700 MILLION: Powerball lottery jackpot raised just hours after initial estimate
I would take the annuity, that way you do not have to worry about where you are going to put all that money, bad investments and banks going under etc. My life will be set after the first year, and I will have millions in payments coming for 29 more years which is all just gravy.

Holy (SNIP) you won the Powerball... Champagne wishes and caviar dreams...
If I win the $700+ Million Dollar Powerball Lottery coming up, I would choose the annuity option [which would be approximately $15 million a year after Federal State taxes], and choose a $250,000 annual disbursement for myself, and the remaining annual disbursement [$15 Million - $250,000] would go to my favorite Spiritual Charity, The Siddha Yoga Meditation Foundation [SYDA Foundation]. The SYDA Foundation can figure out what to do with that large amount of money $$$ on an annual basis, and I w

$675 MILLION: POWERBALL SETS ALL-TIME LOTTERY JACKPOT RECORD
In previous, related threads, I've harped about MUSL estimates sometimes falling short; not honoring the advertised jackpot amount.
However, in this instance, it's near certain all MUSL estimates will be lower than actual. As others have already said, $800 million annuity is looking realistic.
Not sure about $1 billion though. Could happen, but likely the jackpot is going to fall a bit short unless many casual players wager far heavier than they have in past record PB runs. Ie. instead of

$500 MILLION: Powerball jackpot explodes in ticket-buying frenzy
The cash value ended up going up 102 million on tonight's drawing. If my math is right they must have had about 300 million in sales. While there is no doubt the annuity amount will set a new high record the cash record will take about 450 million in sales to reach a new record there. The advertised JP of 675 million is really a very low estimate and will probably be raised daily until the drawing on Saturday.

$500 MILLION: Powerball jackpot explodes in ticket-buying frenzy
Well we are now entering uncharted territory. Cash value could easily hit 500M which would make it tops, and that translates to a 816 jackpot total. That would make me reconsider the cash instead of annuity decision.

$500 MILLION: Powerball jackpot explodes in ticket-buying frenzy
The annuity jackpot for Saturdays drawing ended up being 355.8 mil with a cash value showing 218.4 mil. The cash value right now is showing 306 mil. I think 34% of sales go to the jackpot. This would be about 88 mil higher which would take around 260 mil in sales to increase this much. I might be wrong in how i figured this and if so someone out might point it out.
