Why not choose the annuity?
I do agree that the cash value amount should be easy to find and should be scrolled on the terminal along with the advertised prize and maybe it depends on the state because several do advertise the cash value too. Not very many jackpot winners take the annuity, but it is the highest possible win potential and probably why all the signs and billboards show it and not the cash value.

Why not choose the annuity?
That really bugs me! Being that majority chooses cash on winning jackpots, I would much rather them advertise the Cash Value rather than the Annuity value. If on an 100 million jackpot all I am going to get before taxes is 57 million, I would much rather know that when purchasing the ticket. I would like to be able to expect the amount I am buying a ticket for.

24-year-old single Michigan mom wins $66 million lottery
Good eye! $27 million was the same amount David Edwards received after taxes. Hi annuity share of the $295 million jackpot which was split 4 ways was over $74 million with the cash value being over $41 million before taxes.

Why not choose the annuity?
I posted this link the other day and it probably answers your question. The October 10, 2007 PB jackpot winner was the last to take the annuity and two people were involved. Just guessing but many of the jackpot winners probably spoke with financial advisers and it sure looks like their advice was to take the cash and run.

Why not choose the annuity?
The problem with annuity is that you cannot be sure what the government will decide as far as taxes are concerned. A few years back NJ imposed taxes on lottery (prior to that they never taxed lottery at the state level) and backdated them to the beginning of that year.

Missouri Gov. orders review of Lottery operations
It is taking Mega Millions and Powerball a long time to reach $100 Million annuity. It is the point where players start to play more often. MM and PB starting jackpots are too low. We need a national lottery game with a $100 Million starting jackpot.

Would you play Euromillions if it was available in the US?
I wish Euromillions was available in the US. More choices are always good. What I like about the Euromillions is the advertised amount is the cash value not like the US where it's the annuity. Another advantage with the Euromillions is the winnings are tax free.

Massachusetts man turns 21, wins $1 million lottery
Congratulations and Happy Birthday Mr. McNulty. Good choice on choosing the annuity. Now run out and go get yourself, a couple of nice shirts and ties, and remember not to wear them with sweatpants.

Massachusetts man turns 21, wins $1 million lottery
I'll be honest, I'm surprised the cash is king proponents haven't come in to harangue Mr. McNulty for not taking the lump sum. I guess we can agree, then, that there are some scenarios where the annuity is the right choice; winning when you're really young is one of those instances.

One winner in $260 million Powerball jackpot
I got my tickets for tonight's Powerball drawing. I'll gladly settle for the base $40 million annuity or $14.1 million cash after 39.6% federal taxes.
