Poll: First person to win a $1 Billion JP
I would take the annuity too. So it is spread out over 30 years. That would be awesome except for the mouchers coming round.-weshar75

Has there ever been 2nd prize winners who went on to win it all?
Yep, no too shabby. Look at the list of Worldwide Jackpots on the left. This CA PB 2nd prize $3M amount is higher than many state lotto 1st prize jackpots, currently would be #22 on the list. (and it's in cash, not annuity)

Mega Millions lottery game's redesign aims at bigger jackpots, better overall odds
There's a few other tools they can use as well.
PB has 2% of sales going to a reserve fund, to help cover shortages on early Jackpot wins. The new MM could also incorporate a fixed reserve percentage as well.
They can also increase the annuity from 26 years to 30 years to make fully funded happen earlier.
Currently, MM is fully funded after the 1st roll.(2nd draw) PB is fully funded after the 5th roll.(6th draw) If the new MM keeps about the same 32% of sales for Jackpot pool, and sales

Can MM & PB Start Being Honest? Must this farce continue?
They should get rid of the annuity and force everyone to take the lump sum. The billboards in each state should show your part after federal state taxes withheld. They won't ever do it. One day soon the total government take will be up around 90% because of all the human envy.

Is it a blessing or a curse winning the lottery really late in life??
I would be happy to win the lottery at any age. It would just mean that I would have to take the cash option and not the annuity.-weshar75

Florida city still wondering: Who won the $590M lottery jackpot?
Ok, so they have 60 days to get they money. After that they are forced to take the annuity. It sounds like it is in the state best interest to wait til AFTER the 60 days expire to make an effort to find the winner.

6/49 record jackpot winner bought 2 of the same tickets
Ohio has a 649 game that has had jackpot $50M+(annuity) as do some of its neighboring states but PB and MM get all the attention. I think with the multi-states games getting more expensive some of the state games might get a little more attention when their jackpots get to $40M+ with their better odds and price.

If you won either the MM/PB JP: How soon would you claim your prize?
1. This is not true.
2. This is true
3. Well, I absolutely am completely 100% apathetic about politics, and I don't even live in the US, but its for me, lump sum is just so much better than annuity. Reason on 4th point
4. It's good you want to stay grounded and not become one of those spend-a-holics. But another thing you should consider is, do you really just want the lottery to benefit yourself? Let's not look so far at saving the world for a sec, that takes a lot of wo

If you won either the MM/PB JP: How soon would you claim your prize?
Because it is much easier to manage my money with annuity.
Because I will be less tempted to do stupid things with my money.
Because I am not going to listen to political indoctrination from people who choose the lump sum. Every time we have a discussion about lump sum vs annuity, the reason to choose the lump sum is always 95% political, 5% economics. I am not going to listen to people who are politically motivated.
Because I am perfectly happy with just 125K per year. I am no

How to share with relatives.
If you actually need to pay less than 25%, you should be able to get a refund from the IRS or have your actual income tax credited when you file. For example: if one wins 7M from CA SLP and the winner chooses annuity, the first year payment would be $126,700. The average tax rate from such income would be about 20.5%
