I don't understand either why term string is being used here.
String makes sense in programming languages, but it doesn't seem to be used properly here.
It must be something from old days I am not familiar with.
It seems to be a couple of ways people are trying to predict lottery numbers:
math (by using math operations) string (numbers as images or text with no numerical value) mystical methods (dates, birthdays, stars ...) combined (combination of any methods above)

Wyoming Lottery targets June for first ticket sales
But could be as late as October
The leader of the Wyoming Lottery Corporation says he is confident lottery tickets will go on sale in the state in June.
Jon Clontz, chief executive officer of the lottery corporation, told members of the Cheyenne Greater Chamber of Commerce on Friday that the timeline for selling tickets starts as early as June, but could be as late as October.

New travel questions crop up in Ark. Lottery director's final days in office
Outgoing Arkansas Lottery Director Ernie Passailaigue gave his last scheduled report to state lawmakers today, as the lottery's internal auditor said new questions have arisen about Passailaigue's travel reimbursements.
