Massachusetts Lottery introduces $50 scratch-off ticket with $25 million top prize
Bad deal. They force you into an annuity. It may be slightly more than what the usual annuity is but they force you into it and not many want it because they are too old for an annuity or just want all their money for a 50.00 scratch ticket play. Pass on this lemon of a scratch ticket.

Mega Millions and Powerball Race
It is probably safe to say this is the last time the jackpot increases by only $10 in this run.
Probably. Sales are up a bit and the last 2 drawings (counting the sales forecast for Tuesday 5/13) averaged enough to fund almost $16.5 million worth of advertised annuity. Including the forecast sales there's now enough cash to fund an annuity of $105.64 million of the $110 million being advertised for Tuesday. Based on that we could expect to increase that $105.64 by about $16.5, which would f

$944 MILLION: Mega Millions lottery jackpot set to make holiday wishes come true
I think you've got a tenuous connection with reality. The most recent jackpot to make it past $1.5 billion (annuity value, of course) was the 10/11/23 PB jackpot that got to $1.765 billion. The cash:annuity ratio for that one was even worse than the current MM jackpot (43.86% vs 44.89%) so that annuity value of 1.765 billion required even fewer tickets to be sold than what we'd need to see the same advertise jackpot today. The progression for that jackpot was $1.2 billion (probably pretty close

New Hampshire Lottery launches $30 scratch-off ticket offering record $3 million top prize
Tucker is right. The cash jackpot is the real jackpot. If a winner chooses the annuity the cash amount of the jackpot is simply invested to pay the annuity.
The annuity payout is promoted in advertising jackpots to look better.

Annuity or Cash Value
just look at what happened with publishers clearing house.
Here's a fun fact. Publisher's Clearing House wasn't running a Ponzi scheme, but they were apparently paying for prizes won in the past with the money they were making when a prize payment was due. There was no prize money set aside in a separate fund, let alone with a 3rd party that was responsible for making the payments independently of PCH. If a state defaults on an annuity it's going to be because there was some major financial
