Cash Option vs Annuity
I personally think that the annuity would be better. Especially at my age, as im in my early 40's. It is also wise to have disbursements so you become accustom to your sudden wealth and don't blow it all in a short amount of time.

Lottery ticket bought in Queens hits $133M Mega Millions jackpot
Years ago Ohio had a cash box to check on its play slips but now there's no box and the jackpot winners have the first sixty days of the 180 days claim period to decide whether to take the cash value or the annuity.

Calif. man with 3 jobs wins $39M lottery jackpot
Obviously you haven't read anything about how lottery jackpots are paid and the options winners have. First the jackpot was the amount its cash value would pay over 25yrs or longer if invested in an annuity. The winner has the option of taking his money that way or taking its cash value. If he choose the latter then local, state and federal taxes will be withheld and he will receive a check for what's left.

N.C. town abuzz over $88M Powerball lottery jackpot win
The real difference is the size of the jackpot they get to advertise. Last night no one won the MegaMillions jackpot and now for the next drawing it will be $81M (cash value $50M). Had that been PowerBall with a cash value of $50M they would advertise a $104M jackpot. PowerBall can advertise a 30% larger jackpot with the same cash value because of the way they structured their annuity payouts.

Indiana woman claims $2.5 million Lotto jackpot
It does seem odd as they're both 30 yr annuities. I guess IN does a much better job investing your money for you should you take the annuity option.

Georgia man wins lottery 3 times
The World Class Millions game is paid out in 20 annual installments (for the Extra Chance Drawing), worth $5 Million. Is there an annuity option for the regular scratch offs for this same game? (there are 6 prizes of $1M and 3 prizes of $5M).

Tennessee Lottery shortfall requires reserves
I wasn't suggesting your post was confusing. You DID state 4 or 5 years ago in the original. And the jackpot the Hubbard's won was $25 million annuity.

Cash option and taxes
What IS stupid is to post the few Lottery websites that DO NOT post the annuity AND the cash value amounts just so you can attempt to prove your point. The overwhelming amount of lottery websites that advertise PB MM jackpots DO POST BOTH OPTIONS.Go find someone else to argue your stupidity with.

Cash option and taxes
Of course it's false advertising. Have you ever paid attention to the ads run by the lotteries? If they don't clearly state that the advertised jackpot is an annuity, and they usually don't, then the ads are false and misleading. If they advertise that the megamillions jackpot is now $100 million and they won't give you $100 million (less withholdings) once the ticket is validated, the advertised jackpot was clearly false.

Cash option and taxes
It's NOT false advertisement! If you take the annuity option you will get the entire amount that they advertise, minus taxes every year,it will just take 29 or 30 years to get it all.If you take the cash option you will get whatever the cash option is minus state federal tax.
