$275 MILLION: Powerball lottery jackpot raised again
Does anyone know if it's possible to split the payout methods? For instance, with one winning ticket, can you take half the jackpot as an annuity and the other half in a lump sum? I thought I heard about this being done before. But it was two people who played together and split their winnings in this manner. I guess I'm asking can this be done for one person?

I can't wait, did someone win pb?
USAMega announces the status a long time before Powerball site. Why go some where else to get what is already here? USAMega had the $230M annuity annoucement an hour before the Powerball site.

How do I determine the interest rate received on annual payments?
I agree with Mike, as the main issue in my opinion is What is a BETTER rate of return - Cash or annuity? But one issue that everyone is failing to take into account is RISK. As everyone has a different risk tolerance everyone's return on the cash option would be different. But if you take the annuity it is the same. For example I have a realative that had over 100k in her credit union and would ONLY put the money in 3 month cd's !! best she could earn was about 2-4% at a time. Then she

POLL: Best reason for cash
I thought they dropped the annuity option because too many Martians were complaining about having to wait almost 2 Earth years for each payment (one Martian year = 687 days according to Wikipedia).

POLL: Best reason for cash
I still don't trust the concept of an annuity. We don't know what kind of thing the gov could pull 10 years down the road. I'd rather take 1/2 of a gaurantee than 100% of an unknown.

Judging from the performance of the dollar you would be insane to choose the annuity a lottery offers now. Far better to choose a fund that has global diversity along with some gold or other comodities.

Paying a jackpot over 26 years is too long of a time frame
Advertising that the jackpot will pay the annuity amount without stating the number of years in bold print next to the dollar amount is equivalelent to a car dealer advertising that he will sell a Lamborghini Diablo without the engine. The time value of money is a basic premise. As is selling a car with an engine it. It is misleading not advertising the cash amount.

New Florida Lotto playslips a bother to some
Quick note, Lilly. That $3 million is about $1.7M cash which after taxes would be around $1.1M. The extra dollar adds a bonus, but in the form of an annuity. It's still a lot of money, but I just wanted to clarify that point. I'm pretty sure you can still take it as a lump sum, but it's nowhere near $10M. Cash payouts for FL Lotto average 55% to 60%.

-No Explanation-
Oh man not this again. Cash makes A LOT more sense, as the interest earned each year will actually exceed the annuity. Annuities are for people who do not trust themselves with money, and want to get less each year due to inflation. I have already argued this to death in other threads, but that is the basics.

At this rate no taxes are going to matter to me. It is so much money I don't really care. However as I already said I am a lump sum guy, but would take the annuity at this level with no complaints if I had to. If it is not misleading why don't they post after taxes estimate? Because it IS misleading that is why.
