Paying a jackpot over 26 years is too long of a time frame
I don't think it's misleading. It's a jackpot game, therefore it should be assumed the advertised amount will be paid in annuity. Plus, at the end of the day, it's in the rules of the game, which the person can read.

Jackpot
I think the question is not so much, how they come up with the cash option, but how they get the advertised jackpot amount. The cash part is easy, that is how much money they have collected from ticket sales minus their cut. The jackpot is the total amount you get after they put that money in treasuries etc and then give you a smaller payment every year. After 30 years they pretty much double the total payment. The annuity performance is something you cannot duplicate yourself if you took

Lottery Post Polls / Topics
I chose system since pick 3/4 has most of the posts in this forum. For jackpot games it would be a tossup between quickpicks and cash/annuity.

Went public too soon?
I think annuity would have been best served here. $10 million/26 years would have been easier to budget. Spend 5 million and save 5 million. Any remaining amount given to grand children. He is 54 so he can live to 80 is reasonable. Why take cash?

Florida's New Addition to its Lotto
Is that $10M cash value or $10M annuity? If cash value, I would purchase that option (I always play to win and like this kind of feature over that of the multiplier for non jackpot winners).

$220M Mega Millions lottery jackpot advice offered
Okay, what about people who don't want to invest the money at all? Or, if you're really bad at money, just take the annuity.

Lump Sum or payments?
Taking payments is pretty stupid, even at a young age. Mostly because you can earn far more money in compound interest than you will ever get in annuity principal. Now if you think you are irresponsible and will blow it all, that is your problem. I would take cash all the way down to $1.5 million which is still good for $75,000 a year minimum! That means if I never touched it, and spent all the interest, which would never happen, and only further compound.

Payment of Lottery Prizes
Since 2007 is coming to an end, I was wondering what I would do if I won a jackpot in the next 2 weeks (I can only hope!) because I've read so many different versions of the tax laws. I'm also not sure if smaller prizes like $50,000 are paid right away or if there is still a waiting period. Here is a statement from the IRS When Paid A payment of winnings is considered made when it is paid, either actually or constructively, to the winner. Winnings are constructively paid when they a

When will mega hit this time?
It's still unlikely, but a Holiday record is now a lot more likely than it was. For the record jackpot last March MM went from 130 to 390 in 5 rolls. It's taken 11 rolls to reach 137 instead of 10 to reach 130, and lower interest rates mean the annuity values are smaller, but another 5 rolls could bring it to the very high 300's for the January 1st drawing. Tickets as Christmas presents could be just what it takes to reach a new record.
