state lottery games
I would have to go with pick 3 in DE unless they had a 6 digit lotto like WV (6 out of 25). I like this game and wish I lived closer to the WV line where I could play often. The odds of winning are only about 1 in 175,000. They pay up to 10 winners $25,000 each if there were that many. I don't think they have ever had that problem. They pay $250 for 5 numbers, $10 for 4 numbers and $1 for 3 numbers. I play this game every year when I go to Illinois to visit my mother and I have won several times

Mega Millions in CA
Its called a lottery. Even pick 3 straight has terrible odds. Imagine your doctor gave you the same odds or worse a pick 4 straight game. The difference between 20-40 million isn't much considering it's a game for the entire USA. If it were for the enire state of Wyoming ok - its too long. Wyoming could just have a pick 4 straight game for their state lottery when or if they form one. But for 300+ million people living in the US it had better be some pretty long odds to generate prizes worth pl

Powerball Lottery States Vote to Change Game
You speak as if a 21% increase in odds against winning is no big deal. If that is the case why not just double them. How about 300mil:1? Then we could watch 2-3 winners a year win half a billion dollars or so, thats obsurd. You can already see $100-200 million jackpots with the 120m:1 odds as it happened 5 times last years, so why jack it up just because a few people hit it early this year. And as for a 3.5mil:1 chance of winning $200,000 being a great deal.. this is equally obsurd. Our lo

Texas Lottery Approves Mega Millions Changes
I agree. I would like to see no changes until 1 year after CA joins. Before they increase the odds again, they should address why the anticipated and advertised $300-500 million jackpots didn't happen even before TX CA joined. Personally, I'm glad the $300-500 million jackpot never happened, since I don't think anyone really needs more than $30 million and having more winners makes it more fun. No winner week after week is not only dreary, it reminds you how bad the odds are. But the lottery

Buying more tickets = reduced odds
Quote: Originally posted by wiseone2 on May 06, 2004I only attempted to use math (however inaccurately) to mainly save a lot of people some money. I personally don't think math and the lottery go together. It that were the case, the greatest mathematicians in the world would be winning the jackpots all the time. The greatest mathematicians in the world would know their odds of winning or losing a lottery. They would tell you if you told a person buying a ticket for a pick3 game that he would n

Best way to predict numbers
Quote: Originally posted by prob987 on April 08, 2004My system works reasonably well. I win at about the expected rate for the number of tickets I buy.Quick picks can actually fall somewhat below the expected rate under certain circumstances. There is, however small, some probability, equal to the odds of winning, that if you buy two quickpicks, you will actually get exactly the same numbers, for instance, the computer might give you 7-10-13-16-19 with a megaball of 22 twice. In this case y

How is it possible?
Quote: Originally posted by Andrew on February 13, 2004No one will flip the coin 10 times in a row(and get the same result all ten times), you should try it sometime... Statistics and pure chance play against you there. Scratch off Odds?
Generally Scratch Odds are posted, and yes, they are better than even the best on-line games overall, usually in general. Worst is 1 in 5, but best is 1 in 1; like apparently in Ohio, our $20 Christmas ticket guarantees at least $5 on every ticket. What isn't always known is the Payout, I sat down and figured it out and could be as well as 60%.Actually better than the average slot machine. Here in Pa. we have our cash 5 which is 1 in 8 of getting your dollar back. And the new Match 6 will be

Probability of winning with multiple tickets
So we can see where the confusion comes from... original post is about odds, but title says probability... Probability of buying N tickets for X possible combinations is ALWAYS N in X or N out of X. in probability X is the possible combos and cannot be reduced, your probability with 2 tickets of a pick 2 is ALWAYS 2 in 100, buy 5 tickets, it is 5 out of 100. The Odds are different, you can express those as (N-X) to (N), such as pick 2 with one ticket being 99 to 1 odds, with 5 tickets yo
