Do you see yourself broke in 10 years should you win a jackpot worth $40 million?
That all depends on if it is CA$H or annuity.

Twelve things not to do if you win the lottery
Great post. I'm totally with you on the potential risks of trusting the govt with your winnings in an annuity. It sounds off the wall but hey, anything is possible these days. When I win, there's no way I'm choosing the annuity option. The idea of a couple doing both - cash option and annuity - sounds good though. Although we'd still take the cash option. They recommend the annuity in case you blow it all but I know I wouldn't do that.

$400 MILLION: Powerball jackpot skyrockets
No. Regardless of what the cash value percentage is, the annuity option always poses fundamental problems if you were to take it: You're betting on the fact that you'll live out those 26 (MM) or 30 (PB) years that the MUSL pays out to you and if interest rates will be in your favor at the end of the last payment.
It's not a matter of you not receiving your entire winnings if you die; the MUSL will pay it out to your estate as RJoh mentions, but it won't be in a one time lump sum as they'll c

$300 MILLION: Powerball jackpot raised on huge sales
A When the new powerball record was hit the prize amounts are pretty close to where they were then after 11 rollovers. Annuity is at 300 mill opposed to 270 mill then but the cash value then was 176 mill so its a little lower then that now but not by much. Last time it rolled to 364 annuity and 232 cash befor it rolled once more to the 591 annuity and 371 cash prize that was won. If it rolls Sat then it should go up to probably high 300s annuity and around 230 cash. What may boost this one a bit

Annuity jackpot increased by 1 million but lump sum only increased by 100 thousands?
The California Super Lotto Plus jackpot increased from 33 millions to 34 millions but the lump sum option only increased from 19.9 millions to 20 millions. How come the lump sum option only increased by 100 thousands while the corresponding annuity option increased by 1 million?

Can you see yourself selling your winning MM/PB ticket to JGWentworth etc?
There are quite a few cases out there of people who took the annuity, thinking it was safer than lump sum because they have issues budgeting, still overspend on the annuity and sell future earnings for a lump sum and then go bankrupt. Selling the annuity is always portrayed as the beginning of the end.
But they never say what percentage the lump sum represented and which company they use. It's always implied that they were taken advantage of and got bupkis for their annuity payments. I have
