Q's re: Gift tax on giving winnings to family
Annual gifts in excess of $13,000 are not subject to the gift tax if they are paid directly for the donee's tuition or medical expenses. Check with a Competent Tax Advisor. You may give any one person up to $13,000 in total gifts without filing a gift tax return (from 2009 2011). This limit includes all gifts for the year, not just money or property. It includes birthdays, graduations, holidays, etc. (The limit was $12,000 from 2006-2008; $11,000 from 2002-2005.) For 2011 to 2012, th

D.C. continues rollout of online gambling
The bright glass-and-copper library on Benning Road NE just beyond the Anacostia River opened last year as an anchor for redevelopment and a refuge for the mind. Now, District officials are deciding whether they should use the gleaming outpost in a depressed section of the city for another pioneering purpose: as a gateway to online gambling and the promise of millions of dollars in government revenue. The scramble is on to launch an online casino in the District, which is the first jurisdi

North Carolina: 3/1 - 3/31/2011
Found this out about the Lottery Today !!! [A] new lottery advertising campaign perpetuates the myth that schools receive additional resources from the lottery. The truth is that the Legislature and Governor decide how much state aid will go to local schools and the amount from the lottery is just a small part of that total. Lottery money has never supplemented state aid; it doesn't today and it likely never will. New York State, for example, got into this traditional organized

N.J. Gov. may veto online gambling bill
I'm torn on it. On the one hand, the Feds shouldn't have banned online gambling - and IMO, they don't have the authority to do so within a state. The constiution gives them power to regulate interstate trade, but says nothing about intrastate trade. But of course Christie, a former US attorney, will always be wary of laws that conflict federal law - just like how he is stalling the advancement of the medical marijuana bill. He's trying to keep NJ safely following federal law. That's one of my

N.J. looks to be first in nation with online lottery sales
Retailers worried about loss of revenue, store traffic For Tushar Patel, every $1 lottery ticket he sells at his Pantry 1 Food Market in Hammonton yields more than the 5-cent commission he gets from New Jersey. Patel said he makes more from the other purchases of customers who visit the store for lottery tickets. Eighty (percent) to 90 percent of the people who play the lottery here buy coffee and other things, Patel said. The state lottery posted record sales exceeding $2.6 billion

Winning at Lotto : Luck vs. Intelligence
We all know about the Luck part. But what about the Intelligence? How much of a role does Intelligence play in winning at the Lotto? (what percentage?) You dont have to chase the lottery to show you are intelligent, an intelligent person will not chase the lottery instead he/she will push for legislation so as create a nice game that anyone can try and win be created...Yeah if you crack the lottery you might go in history as one exceptionally intelligent person like a genius, but many

What do you think about states voting to increase the price of tickets and not increase the money
I'm always skeptical when someone says I saw where or I heard something was going to change without providing any evidence. The Georgia Lottery was in the news last year because of bonus incentives and it doesn't make sense for people who benefit from lottery sales to come up with an idea that would decrease sales. Most lotteries have added additional drawings to increase revenues without changing the payoff structure. Don't go giving Md's politicians any ideas The governor of Kentuck

Arkansas Lottery finishes 2009 with $132M in sales
The Arkansas Scholarship Lottery marked the end of its first 95 days of operation at midnight December 31 with a year-end sales total of $132,097,968. The first instant ticket was sold just after midnight on September 28, followed by the introduction of Powerball on October 31 and of the first Arkansas draw game Cash 3 on December 14. During the 2009 Arkansas legislative session when the lottery legislation was crafted, it was expected that ticket sales would begin on January 1, 2010. W

Does all the States Play at Xmas?
I remember at one point Ohio did not do Sunday drawings either. Ohio started Sunday and Christmas drawings in 2007. Having no Sunday or Christmas day drawings was a compromise when Ohio began their lottery. There always was a bit of hypocrisy because players could buy scratch-offs any day of the year. When other state lotteries began adding Sunday drawings, Ohio had more conservative Governors and state houses so the necessary legislation was never enacted. It wasn't until 2006 when a le

State senator wants to repeal Arkansas Lottery
Madison said she has concerns about state government promoting a form of gambling that she believes targets the poor, particularly during tough economic times. We get good revenue from taxes on tobacco, we get good revenue from taxes on alcohol, but we're not out there promoting people to drink or encouraging them to smoke, and yet we are encouraging people to buy lottery tickets, and I think that's probably not a good position for our government to take, Since their getting good revenues ,
