Collecting Big Winnings
Right now I don't think I'd have the time to make plans, so I would probably claim it in January. It wouldn't necessarily be because of taxes, since I'd still need to pay them, but I'd want to talk to a tax specialist anyway, probably an attorney. You can't hold on to your money until April of 2010 as others have written in past threads. Once you receive your W-2G I believe you need to file your income tax return within a few months. If you make a lot of interest, the IRS requires that you fi

$57M Mega Millions lottery winner is sex offender with criminal past
I love stories like this cause it just shows you that anyone can win the lottery, even if you lied, stole, commited arson, grand theft, sex crime, were fired from job, are laying in the hospitol and your sister got you the ticket, you are a lawyer, a priest, a sinner or saint, truth be told God does not involve himself in randomness. Randomness is a human idea. With God nothing is random! Like Time this is a human idea, there is no TIME where God is. Time doesn't exist niether does randomness.

Pair arrested for stealing lottery tickets for 3 years
umm i got a question. where does it say in the article how they was finally caught?? i seemed to have missed it. i am not saying that they are right for stealing the tickets, but the owner has to take some of the blame for allowing this kind of theft to go on right under his or her nose for 3 years. unless the woman that was stealing was also in charge of the lottery ticket inventory. i really would like to know more about this story because there just isnt enough information here.

Police seize winning lottery ticket bought with drug money
Its bothersome because drugs, money, weapons and other evidence has so often disappeared from evidence lockers that they don't even bother to report it, anymore. Much of it never makes it into the 'counting room'. These pills magically become wrong because the person peddling them is not wearing a lab coat. The excuse that he used 'drug money' to buy the ticket is a smokescreen for people who don't engage in much critical thinking. If the 'drug money' had been in his left pocket, wh

Bank details of lottery winners found by road
I wrote in my last post: I do agree its on the side we need to be careful Brain malfunction or bad typo? I meant to write I do agree it's on the rise (identity theft) and we need to be careful. Tntea, yes everyone should do the best job he/she can, but mistakes happen. Guess what? Doctors kill people everyday and politicians bankrupt countries. Cops shoot people too. Nobody can get up in the morning and do a perfect job everyday. The driver goofed and probably feels a lot

if you found a winning ticket that wasn't yours
Ok. I gotta chime in on this one. The IRS doesn't nickel and dime, they don't care. It is too time consuming for them to go after the little ones. Remember, the majority of taxes paid to the IRS comes from business and the top 10% of income earners I am talking like 90% of the collected taxes comes from the top income brackets. Any money that you make and keep in your mattress unreported, is just that, in your mattress. They only know about it if you bank it and earn interest on it. I ha

Ethics or Not
??? I don't understand this poll. This really has nothing to do with ethics at all. I don't think you have much of a choice in this case. You cannot cash the ticket if someone else's name is on the back of it. When you walk into the Lottery Office, they will ask for 2 forms of ID including a photo ID (driver's license, passport) and your social security number. So whoever chooses this answer is admitting to Identity Theft! Second, if there is any suspicious activity, the Lottery Of

Would you wait until 2011 to gift money away (no gift/estate tax 2011)
Bravo, Orangeman! I agree that taxation is theft, only because the government spends the money we earn any way it pleases. It uses trillions of dollars to destroy a foreign country instead of providing shelter for the homeless and food for the hungry. It uses our taxes to destroy the environment instead of to save it. I want to comment on how eloquently you described the whole idea of gift tax. It is telling people who have either been very wise or frugal that they cannot leave their he

Contacting Professionals After You Hit A Multi-Million Dollar Prize!
Sorry everyone that I keep posting on this thread, but I just read this comment, and Guru again has a good point. How would you prove you had the winning lottery ticket in it? What if there was a fire? I would sleep with it, wear it, never let it out of my sight until it was validated. This is copied from the FDIC web site Safe Deposit Boxes The contents of a safe deposit box are not insured by the FDIC.
