The Ultimate Cash vs. Annuity Poll
Hypersonig:You have to worry about the possibility of your kids paying INHERITANCE TAXES if you die before you receive all the annuity payments. If you ever win, and seek financial, etc advice, they'll almost certainly tell you choose LUMP SUM, regardless of your prize. You also don't know what the future tax rates will be, etc.

Tonite's NY Lotto is....
Mega:Actually, the NY Lotto annuity consists of graduated payments (which someone who graduated high school knows to avoid).Someone who makes the WRONG choice in NY Lotto receives 2.5% (before witholdings) in the first check, 2.7% in Year Two, 2.8% in Year Three, 2.9% in Year Four...and 5.0% in the final payment. But, since NY Lotto has a TERRIBLE prize return, I _almost_never_ play NY Lotto, even with the cash option.(Best game in NY is the Instant Take Five scratcher.)

Take the Lump sum...not Annuity!
RJ: I always try to find out the rules of the different lotto-type games before I play them.Nobody is forced to buy lottery tickets. My point is that the rules of some games DO NOT protect the rights of (potential) lottery players, including that of being able to collect a prize in lump sum instead of in X annual payments.I have sent numerous e-mail messages to the NY and Mass. lotteries complaining about their less-than-total respect of _legal_adults_ who wish to make their own decisions a

I'd love to add some more information to the definition explaining why the cash option is usually somewhere around half of the advertised annuity amount. (I didn't vote yet.) Do you want to take a crack at it?

CASH OPTION: Offered in many games where the top prize(s) is/are otherwise paid through an annuity. The choice is either exercised when you buy the ticket or after you win, depending on the rules of the game.

NY Lotto Players, BEWARE!
NY should always force a Annuity Only option like they do with those wonderful high end scratch off tickets. (ie. Lucky 7s)
