Mega Millions and Powerball Synchronized
My guess is Powerball will be MORE than $15 million if no winner tonight. Remember that the PB annuity is now 30 payments vs Mega Millions' 26.

our chances are NIL
TG636: Welcome to Lottery Post. (I live in NY state.) As long as you avoid the Mass. 6/42 and 6/49 games...both are still ANNUITY-ONLY!! (If you live near NH, Hot Lotto is a good alternative; likewise, CT Classic Lotto makes sense if you're a short drive from the Nutmeg State).

Suggestion for NEW ENGLAND
Gary: Think about it. Expanding the 6/49 to all of New England would produce MORE jackpot winners. Also, the SW corner of New England is near NYC. Furthermore, offering a CASH OPTION would encourage more people to play. The amount of the annuity would still be advertised, but the PR campaign would say that a cash option WOULD be available.

Suggestion for NEW ENGLAND
I agree with you CASH. But the problem with 6/49 is there are so many few winners in a year. In a year only 2 to 3 jackpots are won. The sales are low for MASS 6/42 and 6/49. If they give CASH OPTION, the jackpot size will be much less huritng the sales pitch more. I usually don't play either of them for ANNUITY reasons.

Yes, Cash Only, the winner wants cash
HURRICANE, W.Va. Lottery officials said it is worth $314.9 million the biggest lottery jackpot ever won by a single ticket anywhere in the world. An attorney claiming to represent the winner has already contacted lottery officials.Officials said the winner opted for a cash prize rather than an annuity. That will come to a lump-sum payment of about $170 million.

Will Powerball Be Won Tonight?
Tom: Do NOT take the annuity! Then you will receive COAL in your Christmas stocking for the next 30 years!! ;)

Damn those New Yorkers..
Gary: CA and NY require the cash/annuity choice when you PLAY. Here it's more or less assumed that everybody wants lump sum unless the player says otherwise. Mega Millions tickets cannot be canceled in NY (or anywhere as it's a multi-state game.) Since March, NY has had a terrible scratch game with Lotto free plays as prizes... they all say 26 ANNUAL PAYMENTS !

Michigan's Winfall
Bradly: I hope WINFALL puts pressure on Ohio to overhaul its Stupid Lotto - no more Kicker (MI dropped its Zinger a while ago) and for OH to use the same cash value for lump sum vs annuity winners. I'm sure OH will counter that its Lotto 6/49 starts at $4 million, whereas WINFALL will be capped at $5 million.

NY subscription winner a LOSER
I saw that the $25 million ticket holder for the NY Lotto 6/59 came forward today. He hit the December 11 drawing. As you know, in NY you still have to make the cash/annuity choice when you PLAY. He made the wrong choice, and has no chance to correct it.

Christmas 1996 PB winners
The two articles Todd posted this morning suggested the Idaho couple opted to take the annuity. WRONG! The Powerball cash option began in November 1997, when the double matrix changed for the first time.
