Technology is only as good as how much they've revealed to us. I saw a show on the TV a year ago that showed how prowlers were on the loose wearing devices that scanned credit cards as the person simply walked passed them. It scanned the cards instantly. The story was based out of a restaurant as a real example of one incident. Now they have protective sleeves you slip your card into to protect the potential victim from this.
