Can MM & PB Start Being Honest? Must this farce continue?
It was clearly a personal attack. Only if you believe breaking the law by leaving the scene of an horrible accident makes sense. But people who don't like seeing an inflated annuitized amount is arguing from an ethical perspective. Nobody cares if you disagree with MUSL's ethics in advertising the jackpot amount. Neither PB or MM tickets are sold in Toronto so you probably don't know state lotteries all across the U.S. advertise the huge jackpots in the form of highest possible win.

Can MM & PB Start Being Honest? Must this farce continue?
I can see both sides of this argument. I completely agree with you, stack47, in that it makes sense for them to advertise the aunnitized jackpot, and give you a check for the annuitiized amount even though that's not what you're gonna get. It also makes sense for a guy who accidentally hit and badly injured an old lady at night to drive away as fast as possible so no one knows he did it. It just makes sense for him to avoid the trouble. But you know what? That's not what

Annuity or Lump Sum?
It sounds to me that you are referencing a scenario in which a winner who takes the annuity option doesn't have to pay any additional taxes based on the assumption that the yearly proceeds will not be invested. That's not what I was referring at all. I am just referring to SS and medicare taxes, not income taxes that applies to both choices. I already clarified this in the message you replied to: Please note that I am talking about exemption from SS and Medicare taxes, not general

if you had the power to change certain things to the MM/ PB jackpots- what would they be?
OK I SAY THEY BETTER CHANGE AS FOLLOWS: Ehh Would it matter if the lottery just released the name of the Jackpot winner? I'd say only the lottery can release the name as in you had to actualy go to the website to see it if you wanted. As in the media was not allowed to report it either. But...will that work? ha ofcourse the state aswell. I think the lottery is right on saying it helps that people know someone (whether true or not whatever) won. No state or Lottery can force photo or conferen

Cali Powerball players: How much wagering for first draw?
For the April 10th draw, Powerball is $60 million annuity or $38.9 million cash value. Each ticket is $2. For the April 9th draw, Mega Millions is $56 million annuity or $42.3 million cash value. Each ticket is $1. All I care about is the cash value and right now Mega Millions has the larger cash value and tickets are half the price of Powerball. They couldn't have timed this any worse. I bet California Lottery officials are wishing they launched Powerball a few weeks back when the j

Mechanic and his wife are Missouri winners of $588M Powerball jackpot
I'm guessing it is less then billion. 587 mil - 325 mil = 252 mil. (increase for jackpot), but this is annuity based, so not real number 719 mil - 587 mil = 132 mil (in second and below prizes) 252 mil + 132 mil = 384 mil in payout. Even though the jackpot increase is annuity based, and you would think 384 mil is 50%, still not enough for the billion. But over the course of 16 drawings before it got that big it def-ly took in more than a billion of our earned money.

MM jackpot $47M/$36.1M and PB jackpot $50M/$33.3
I think you're refering to the average final jackpot and not average jackpot, the latter being more like $100M annuity. Since the changover, it's reached or exceeded the average only twice independent of the previous matrix. At current annuity rates, $100M Jackpot represents something like $66M bucks. The first time it passed $100 (jumping from $94 to $113, it achieved the cash value of the prize as being approximately 32% of sales. The second time, it was barely below. For all prizes won

Cash Vs Annuity Payments
Yes I understand how the annuity works and yes the compound interest formula over simplifies the question but the basic fact remains, government bonds are at very very low rates and taxes are at low rates. If you look at treasury.gov at the start of this year yields were 0.01 to 2.98, and only the 20 and 30 year notes are over 2. Go back 5 years to 07 and the yields were 4.68 to 5.11 and it was the 3 month to 1 year notes that were all over 5. All they do with the annuity is take the cash in

taxes on lottery winnings :(
Welcome to LP young man. Great place to socialize and make positive comments... here's a few thoughts based on my knowledge. If PA is like FL and we have no state taxes, then all you have to worry about is the FED tax issue. Yes the Powerball and MM claim the 25% tax grab right off the bat. Key issue is to research the IRS website and it will show you that in 2012 if you make over a certain amount the tax rate goes up to as high as 35%....Face it, millionaires will be paying that rate of 35% at

Lotto tickets bought with bags of coins lead to bust in massive Metro theft
But Magistrate Judge T. Rawles Jones Jr. noted that Haile might need one after all because some of that money might not be available. The taxpayers may very well be entitled to recover those funds, he said. Can you say, Genuises!!! ?? Wow, I hope they both lose their pensions and I think the taxpayers should be reimbursed for their capers seven times over. Good scam as it seems they made off with more money than they spent on lottery tickets. But how low can you go. I want to find
