The payout on matching 4/5 on michigans Fantasy 5 is too LOW!
The payoff percentage in Ohio is about 10% of the odds on all three lower tier prizes. I agree winning $100 for matching 4 of 5 is terrible, but people play because of the large jackpots and smaller second tier prizes help to create larger jackpots. On average, the Michigan jackpots are about 25% higher than in Ohio and not very many jackpot winners will care about the second prize being much lower.
By the way RJ, nice chart and excellent analysis.

Statistically Speaking
Your post made me wonder if we would have higher jackpots if we were all forced to select our own numbers and there were no such thing as quick picks. We may very well have seen jackpots in the 1/2 million dollar range or higher. Probably because people would be playing more lower numbers. Humm!
However it's a known fact that more jackpots are won with Qpicks because more Qpicks are sold than personal picks.

powerball draws being computerized
unfortunately everything i said above might come to pass.remember how everyone back in the 90's use to say there would never be 200 million dollar jackpots? or in the 80's they use to say there would never be high double digit jackpots? well they both came to pass by raising the matrix.too bad that to get it over the half billion dollar hump they might resort to the last resort....RNG.see they know sooner or later people quit playing unless they see bigger and bigger jackpots.even the 250 mill

Mega Millions Won :-(
But there will be no $500+ million jackpots if they keep the matrix this way. We just buy too many tickets.
And yet if we don't buy more tickets there will be no $500+ million jackpots either. A matrix change will create more losers, do we not have enough losers now? Are losing players willing to lose even more just to see $500+ million jackpots? Those are the questions.

Unclaimed Prizes
NO, that money should go into an unclaimed prize fund and be given out in bonus draws or to support future jackpots. How the system is set up ... if there's two winning tickets and no winner comes forward, the second unclaimed ticket becomes expired and the prize goes back into the lottery pool. We just had a whole months of bonus lottery jackpots that started at 25, 30, 37 and 40 million dollars on our Lotto-649. Those huge bonus jackpots were partly a result of unclaimed money. One guy

Lotteries long for 'jackpot fever'
I don't think that raising the odds will encourage people to play, I think that larger jackpots will. Yeah there will be a waiting period, but it is also likely that the jackpot will remain larger longer, and despite the odds, if there is a 400 or 500 million dollar jackpot out there, people will be more likely to at least buy 1 ticket. My point is that for better odds and smaller jackpots, I play my local lottery, but I'll only fork over the money for the megamillions when their are mega jack

Lottery mega-jackpots generating less 'buzz'
My lottery pool and I are the types who will only play the Megamillions when it's 100mil or higher, otherwise, we play NY lotto. We also live close to CT, which makes it easy to play powerball as well. I think that the problem is that there are a lot of people out there just like us who wait for the larger jackpots, but if any of you have noticed, there haven't really been many lately, especially with the Megamillions. It barely gets over 100 mil let alone reaching those huge jackpots that were
