Some lottery winners missing their jackpots
True story:
Elderly man reads the newspaper every morning in the bathroom.
He dies. Widow picks up the old papers, finds a Powerball ticket.
Her kids insist: Mom, check it out. She does just in time!
Widow claims a $100,000 prize the day before the ticket expires.
That story from Karen Emery, deputy director of the Arizona Lottery is a rare happy ending in the history of long-lost lottery tickets.
More than a half-billion dollars in lottery prizes went uncollected last y

Texas lottery players want to get rid of 'bonus ball'
Players are letting the Texas Lottery Commission know in sometimes blunt and colorful language that they want the bonus ball to be bounced out of the Lotto game.
The panel that oversees lottery operations is expected to vote next week on a proposal to return the game to a format resembling the one that was thrown out a little more than three years ago because officials were concerned about its profitability. But they ran into a problem when the new game proved to be about 30 percent less pr

Predicting winning numbers? Fact or fiction?
I have been running tests on a System on California Fantasy 5 that produces between 6000 and 8000 combinations per draw. The System updates a Box (7 Numbers per Position) after Every Draw. Duplicate Numbers are Eliminated by Position, but are allowed in more than 1 position in the Box. The Wheel produces only Valid Combinations (5 different numbers). I am using the previous 39 Draws, Counting how many Times a Number hits by Position and taking the top 7 hitters in each Position. With Each Draw,

Montana Lottery celebrates 25 years of jackpot dreams
The Montana Lottery celebrated its 25th anniversary late last month with parties at retail locations around the state and knowledge that it was on a roll.
We had a successful first 24 years, said Montana Lottery Director Angela Wong, who's been in the role 18 months. And we just completed a record fiscal year, with sales of more than $50 million for the first time and weekly sales exceeding $1 million for an unprecedented 19 weeks.
Fiscal year 2012 ended June 30, and preliminary data ind

is it luckier to buy tickets on the rich side of town?
This is a classic question in sociology and applied economics, and the answer is well-documented by demographic studies and market research in the United States (such as data from the Brookings Institution, the Tax Foundation, and various state lotteries).
The direct answer is: people from all social classes play, but the financial impact, frequency, and motivation are profoundly different between the poorest and the wealthiest.
Here is the breakdown of how lottery consumption

Powerball drawing produces huge number of big winners, including two who split the jackpot
The odds of winning are the same, but the odds of sharing the jackpot are higher..
It is like in NZ a lotto official said that there were usually about 3,000 tickets with 1,2,3,4,5,6 ... When picking your own numbers, people want a logical reason... Birthdays is another (so more likely to share prizes/ jackpots if the numbers are 1 - 31.

Secrets of a lottery lawyer-Kurt Panouses interview
Actually having two games and letting the players pick may be worse right now.
That just leads to having a limited pool of player cash going to more games which leads to slower rolls and more player fatigue.
The lottery market needs to sort itself out and cull the games that don't pull in much player dollars.
I doubt that will happen anytime soon because the lotteries don't like paying out. That is why we keep getting more and more games that roll slower and have lower jackpots.

Powerball drawing produces huge number of big winners, including two who split the jackpot
Whatever Dude, you are probably one of the ones who are ALWAYS complaining about California always winning the jackpot. Now Kansas and Indiana split the jackpot with a bunch of other states getting 2nd and 3rd prize and YOU still complain. No one is forcing you to play the lottery, stop playing and quit complaining because people here do NOT want to hear it/read it. FYI, Indiana has won more Powerball jackpots than any other state, with 40 wins but NO one ever complains about that state. People

Fantasy 5 Group Balance Strategy: Why Spreading Numbers Across Decades Wins Big
I've been digging into Michigan Fantasy 5 draws lately, and one pattern jumps out, winning combos rarely clump in one decade like all teens or 20s. Historical data shows that most jackpots spread across groups: 1-10, 11-20, 21-30, 31-39, hitting 3-4 groups on average. All from one group? Super rare, under 2% odds. Smart play: mix low-high with 2-3 odds/evens, aiming for sum 55-125 (avg 11-25 per number). Skipped this last week and whiffed; now wheeling balanced sets like 5-17-24-29-31 from smart
