MADDOG'S Powerball Challenges (Discussion)
I've seen some dubious information at Wikipedia too, but it usually gets rectified soon enough. If the complex Present Value of an Annuity calculations were detailed, I'm afraid most people would fall asleep reading it! At today's low interest rates, the 2X number puts you pretty much in the ball park, and works for me.
Any pointers to the stats?

$242 MILLION: Mega Millions lottery jackpot continues to climb
Interest peaking in Friday's mega-draw
By Todd Northrop
What started yesterday as a $237 million jackpot estimate has become a $242 million estimate a day later.
Lottery officials have raised the official annuity jackpot estimate for tomorrow night's Mega Millions drawing to $242 million.
The cash option likewise has been raised another $3.2 million to a whopping $154 million.
Lottery players interested in learning how taxes will affect the annuity and cash payouts can visit USA M

Mega Millions: $168M Christmas Eve lottery jackpot
In Massachusetts, we have 60 days to decide on a payment option. If you dont choose within that time, its automatically annuity. We also have a full year to claim the prize from the drawing date.
Also, last time MA won a major jackpot was in 1999 and 2004. I think were due again, or another state that hasn't won at all might win.

Kentucky lottery winner wastes no time claiming jackpot
The lottery did give Meade the big check for $19.12 million and reported he would get about $6 million after taxes suggesting there is a missing $13 million so it seems they are perpetuating the false advertising image. The average player probably doesn't understand the different between the annuity amount, the cash amount, and taxes.
But I'm surprised as Todd is that some people here on LP don't understand it; especially since it's discussed in depth at least once a month.

Porn shop lottery winner doesn't reveal himself
me too, i love reading about those single-ticket qp wins
... and for me, it's also neat to hear that someone (once in awhile) decides to take the annuity - like Steve did.

stupid lottery questions.
Under varying circumstances, anything can affect your winnings -- war, inflation, executive order, legislation, comet impact.
The lottery going bust won't hurt you. They don't hold onto your annuity money, there are investment firms for that.

Florida Lottery installing more instant ticket vending machines
I have begun to see vending machines pop up in the Hartford, CT area at supermarkets. I noticed that one of the stores had tickets for sale behind the counter as well.
On a separate note -- someone won Connecticut Classic Lotto last night for the $4.3M annuity ($2.6M cash). It now resets to $1M, where it should (by experience) sit for 2-3 draws.

Living off of winnings VS living off of interest.
The perfect answer is that you can never have too much money; but if I have to put a minimum, it would be around 50M ($75M) for someone aged under 50.
However, I would also be happy to accept an annuity of 2M a year for life.

Illinois Lottery privatization announcement expected Wednesday
It's kind of just like the lottery itself going for the cash option as oppossed to an annuity, isn't it?
I think these states doing this are going to wind up regretting it. Why sell a cash cow?

Mega jackpot is right where I would want to win
Not likely. The jackpot seems to be rising slowly because interest rates are low. Thus the cash value/annuity value is nearing historical highs, close to 70% for MM.
This means that a jackpot that is the largest ever in cash value might not show up even in the top 5 jackpots ever.
