Payout of winnings less than jackpot
OK, now I am confused. Is the 5 ball $200,000 win only available as the 30 yr annuity?
Justxploring...so to verify what I think you are saying, if I hit 5/5 with no powerball, they still withhold like they would a JP win. Basicly half off the top (since it is a cash option) and then the normal taxes that are for state and federal. So basicly, a $200,000 win would be like $80-90K once you get the money. Is that correct?

Non believers
I say the same thing, you must play to win! However, since purchasing a lotto software I went from playing roughly $5.00 twice a week; with more $$$ when the JP was huge, to averaging far more with the software generated wheels. So I can see where people will get the impression you are spending to much money. I have very little debt, my children are well cared for, and I have a nice career. I play because its a challenge to beat the system, and the payoff---well you know. The Mega Millions is we

Let's Have Fun: Predictions for 2008 (Not number predictions)
Lottery Director Rebecca Paul loves the idea of the cash option annuity, tries to get a multi-state lotto going based on that and here's my numbers, give them to me in a quick pick.
Only Tennessee, North Carolina, and North Dakota are interested.

Is it worth buying a large number of tickets once a year?
As far as the probability and payout goes there's a definite advantage to buying all of the tickets for a single drawing. Buying 1040 tickets for one drawing offers a better chance of winning the jackpot than buying 10 tickets for each of 104 drawings. How much better depends on the game. For pick 3 you would have a 100% chance of winning compared to 65%. For PB or MM the improvement is very small, but you would have the option of playing for a bigger jackpot. You'll never know ahead of time whi

Year-old Indiana Lottery jackpot finally won
Maybe they don't buy an annuity but just put the money an a saving account that pays 3% API and write yearly checks until it all gone.
Or maybe they do buy regular annuities, but they are only obligated to pay out the advertised jackpot amounts so they also make some additional profit off the investments.

Some States Consider Leasing Their Lotteries
I'll take the annuity on a large jackpot. Nothing in life is without risk. But privatization begs the question: What would a private company think of computerized drawings? They might save money but people are becoming wise to them and most prefer ball drawings. Do you think privatization would trend away from computerized drawings and maybe that is how to ultimately eliminate them? If you could own a Lottery how would YOU run it? I'd keep ball drawings and I'd significantly raise the payback to

Hoosier Lotto
Wait, when do THEY want this to get hit? Um, if nobody matches all 6 numbers, that means that the jackpot rolls. That's how a lot of jackpot games work. You need to learn how to read. Also, what would be the point in putting in more than $500,000 each roll if the state can't afford to do so? Not all states roll the same amount every time a jackpot rolls. Also, last time I checked, the cash value was around 60% of the current annuity amount, so I don't know why you're complaining.

New Jackpot Winners
Just one time I'd like to see you explain why you hope they take the cash option. You have said it hundreds of times but I've yet to see why you believe that is superior to taking the annuity.
And while you're at it, I'd like to see the thought process behind why somebody with a winning MM jackpot ticket would not claim it.

Lottery winner goes from rags to riches to rags
In memory of Cash Only...
If I win the $40 million Florida Lotto jackpot tonight, I'll probably take the annuity. I used to think it was better to take the money run, and still wonder about it. However, knowing every year that, no matter how badly you screw up your life, you'll still be getting a big check soon must be a very comforting feeling.

Largest Texas Lottery jackpot claimed by trust
It is odd that a group of people would take the annuity unless this group is under 5 people. And that brings up another question. What would an employer do if all but *one of his employees were in a lottery pool and hit a huge MM or PB jackpot?
*There is always one guy telling the rest they are wasting their money.
