To my fellow LP members
I do agree with you CASH, there should be at the very least an option of a lump sum cash payout. I believe OH used to be the same way, someone correct me if I'm wrong. Not too long ago in Ohio you had to specify at the time of the ticket purchase whether or not you wanted the cash option , and that option was printed on the ticket. If you didn't specify then you would be locked into an annuity if the jackpot was won. Again, someone correct me if I'm wrong, this is just what I remember.

To my fellow LP members
As I've posted before there is a highly respected consumer advocate, Clark Howard, who holds a dim view about purchasing annuities due to heavy commissions and heavy taxation when selling them.

As far as CASH Only's posts if I don't want to read them, I simply don't. However there needs to be a voice somewhere against lotteries trending away from cash jackpots toward annuity only

Ohio is bringing in the Classic Lotto and getting rid of Lot O Play!!
What nights will the game be drawn? The first draw will be on a Monday.
I bet Ohio will continue to stiff cash option winners by making the cash value exactly 50% of the annuity, unlike Mega Millions, which uses a floating percentage.

What is up with MM/PB
I was looking at the history of 2006 winners in Powerball and up till now their have been 10 winning jackpots and 11 winners because one jackpot recently was split. Out of those winning jackpots half of them exceeded the $100 million annuity. Out of the half 2 were in the $100 million range, 3 were in the $200 million range and their was 1 that was over $300 million. I think though because the jackpots happened in the first half of 2006 players tend to forget that fact. Kind of what has Powe

Illinois woman wins $7 million lottery jackpot
nc6string
It say her father is 84, so let's say she's 64. Do you really expect someone in their 60's to take an annuity, not to take the cash?

NY Lotto-28 years of ripping off players
NY Lotto began as a 6/40 (two plays for $1) in November 1978.
I dreamt last night that NY Lotto 59 (which began the week of 9/11/2001) was becoming Lotto 62. I have no idea whether the game is about to be changed; NY just hired a new lottery director. Hopefully he will push for a hike in the ridiculously low 40% payout. For all I care, NY Lotto can go back to being annuity-only; it wouldn't lose much from me.

VA Scratch Offs
I've lived in Mahopac nearly three years (originally from Westchester Co.) I will be moving into an apartment soon (staying in Mahopac because of my job, and the library, which I try to go to every day so I can appear on LP.) I know FDR was from your area.
If you ever come back to NY state, do not play NY Lotto, as it's the world's biggest ripoff. Certain NY scratches also have to be avoided as they are annuity-only.

New Penn. Lottery raffle game on sale next week
In NY state it would be wrong to buy a $20 scratch, or two $10s, as they are annuity-only. Buy $20 of Instant Take Five ($1) instead.
Right now it would be a good idea to take the $20 and play Hot Lotto, even if you have to drive a bit to New Hampshire, West Virginia, or DC.

a poll about annuities and lump sum
Cash lump sum is better; you can take your own annuity or invest it. same as social security. If you take at 62, say get $1500.00 month vs. 65, that's 52,000 in hand more than waiing until 65 with an increase. Life is not written in stone; every day get more precious. Of course if you have a geat job, then not good. And who knows how long you will make around the bend. Who says you wil be around in so many years, and if it is not transferrable to a bene, tough. Show me the money.

Will we see a $260,000,000 - $300,000,000 Jackpot this year?
I estimate that there is a 75% chance that we won't see such a jackpot this year, at this point. The 25% chance that we will see such a jackpot means it is by no means impossible.
Such jackpots are unusual. Powerball produced one such jackpot early in the year. In the same run (using the inflated PB annuity, it ran to $365M. Megamillions produced two such jackpots this year on separate runs, ending each at $267M and $265M in February and April.
