Ohio couple hits lottery jackpot
Has to be after taxes. First thing I thought as I read this article was typo because who would play if the lump sum was less than 1/2 of the advertised jackpot? So I went to the Ohio site and they have a link to cash option calculation. If you put it 1.0 (for one million) this is what you get: Oops. somehow the figures aren't copying. Sorry. I'm trying to delete this. Anyway, it shows the way they get to $357,000.STATE TAX ANNUITY PAYMENTSCASH OPTIONANNUALPAYMENT: PRESENT DAYCASH VALUE: FED

Probability of a MegaMillions rollover.
Here are the long range predictions of rollovers based on my exponential curve fitting program that generates long range probabilities. For what it's worth, the first column is the historical values form the last great run, the first is the number the model predicts for the annuity value. The second is the cash value. The fourth column is the probability that that jackpot will itself if the run gets there. The last column is the probability we will get past that jackpot from where we are now

Probability of a Rollover in Powerball.
The powerball jackpot has rolled. The cash value is now $56.5M; the annuity value is $115M. The Powerball sales figures are not as regular as those in MM, and not as many averages are available for large jackpots, since the maxtrix change is comparatively recent, the end of Aug, 2005. My crude estimate is to assume that the lottery will have $23.6M in sales, near the average figures for the last lottery runs at this level. If the lottery sells this amount of tickets on this drawing, the pro

Woman Cashes Lottery Ticket From 1992
That is the way it should be here. If you win a ticket worth millions...why is it that the states want you to cash it in within a year? It's your money and your ticket. You should be able to cash a winning ticket whenever you feel ready to. Even if it is ten years later. Where is a lawyer when ya' need one....maybe we can change the way our money is disbursed in this country. I know it is big business with the states taking the cash from sales and trying to invest it so they can make a profit

Ohio woman decides to drop appeal over lottery tax
HAPPY FRIDAY EVERYONE....1/20/2006This story is certainly a 'real lesson' for me...even though I always understood 'CASH ONLY' and his position for the LUMP SUM PAYOUT.....this will altimately hurt the Annuity side of the game. More people will become savvy about the down side of Annuities, and take the Cash Options or simply stop playing if it's not offered. It means more money payouts for those of us taking the Lump Sum, because we won't have to worry about 'tax law changes'. We will take

Hoosier Lottery is Hit!
As I walked to my computer this morning I had a funny feeling the Hoosier Lottery was hit last night. I was right! According to the Hoosier Lottery website one person hit last night for $25.5 million annuity (30 years) or $10.2 cash value (40%).It's been more than 5 months (July 27, 2005 I think was the date) and a total of 49 rollovers since someone hit it. Now the fun begins. It will be interesting to see if anyone...the winner, the press or public...realizes the payout was changed during

Probability of a MegaMillions rollover.
The MM has rolled over. The cash value is now $13.4M and the annuity value is $23M. The recent jackpot sold enough tickets to fund a $4.4M cash jackpot. A running average of 3nd draw sales since the matrix change suggests that the sales will be around 15.5M, similar to what the second drawing has produced. (The last running average proved to be nearly spot on in predicting the last draw.) If this many tickets are ultimately sold, the probability of various numbers of winners is given in the

PB jackpot for 12/10/05 has rolled to 100
MUSL clearly posts the annuitized and cash value amounts of the estimated PowerBall jackpot right at the top of its website. Whether a jackpot winner chooses an annuitized prize paid out over 29 years or a lump sum payment, MUSL has no way of knowing exactly what anyone's particular tax liability will ultimately be. Tax exposure can vary greatly depending on a person's state, locale, and personal circumstances. The advertised jackpot figures are an accurate reflection of what MUSL actually disbu

Newspaper takes a hard look at the N.J. Lottery
To Chuck 32 from Demonter:The State's percentage is their profit; in the gambling world they refer to the bookmaker's percentage as the vigorish . Raven considers the fact the a government is taking a profit out of the play it is a TAX . According to Webster's Dictionary a tax is an imposed levy...the State's percentage is an imposed levy, therefore Raven refers to it as a TAX. That I call a semantic twist since it has the one essential ingredient common to all taxes-the fact that they are i

Californians targeted by Spanish lottery scam
True, they said there was no purchase necessary (and by law there wasn't supposed to be) -- but often if you didn't purchase you had to send in a 3x5 card with your name and address or something else that screamed please throw this in the trash. The people who bought magazines got the fancy stamps and offical entry documents and postage-paid envelopes. :) So, psychologically you felt compelled to order at least one magazine -- and this was on purpose. These magzine folks were marketing pro
