Powerball Lottery Jackpot Grows to New Record of $340 Million
I'm constantly amazed at the quibbling on these posts over how the players are getting bamboozled by the lottery executives or the hand wringing over whether it's better to take the annuity versus cash and how the lottery is rigging everything against the players. Or whether it's a new record depending upon how the calculation is done.Would any of you even care if you had to deal with the problem of worrying about this if you actually won the jackpot? Not me. I'd love the problem of figuring ou

Probability of a Rollover in Powerball.
The cash value of the Powerball jackpot that just rolled over was, based on sales, was $151M. The new cash value is $164.4M. Although the new cash jackpot is not as high as Jack's jackpot, $170.5M, the Powerball marketing department's annuity value to click in the lottery cap. This means that it is impossible to match Jack's jackpot on this drawing. The Powerball will be distributing, it says, about $13,000,000 of cash value to the second tier 5+0 prizes.The combined cash value of the 5+0 an

Powerball at $340,000,000!!
There is a rule that if Powerball reaches a new record, for every drawing, the jackpot cannot increase by more than $25 million per drawing. The previous record was $315 million, so for next drawing, the annuity jackpot cannot be higher than $340 million - if it is not hit Wednesday, Saturday's jackpot cannot be higher than $365 million, and so forth. The extra money that goes to the jackpot rolls down to the match 5+0 winners, and that accumulates until the record jackpot is won, on which d

Probability of a Rollover in Powerball.
The jackpot has risen again to a cash value of $146M, still well short of Jack's jackpot, but nonetheless impressive. From the size of the new jackpot, it would seem that the lottery is predicting $76.7M in sales for this drawing. The probability for various numbers of winners is now: 059.16%131.06%28.15%31.43%40.19%50.02% There is still a better than even chance that the jackpot will roll over tonight. Of course it is very possible that there will be one or more winners, as well.If the jac

A new show about the lottery (Windfall)
Since I don't watch TV I guess I will miss the promos and the show. 386 million split 20 ways as a post tax (the full 35% since you are dreaming if you think you'll pay only 25%) lump sum would only be 7.5 million (assuming MM more generous cash prize) or 482,500 as a 26 year annuity (less if it's Powerball). This is hardly a massive amount of cash. It's more than enough for me to retire on but not in luxury. More like a nice upper middle class retirement. Also I wouldn't be surprised if the st

would you take cash or payments on the PB
If I chose annuity, I would be saying I trusted the Government to manage my money for the next 30 years. Name one financial effort the Government has ever managed successfully. Think Boston Tunnel Project. They have been managing my Social Security Account since 1954. Any one want to brag on that fisaco? The State of LA and the New Orleans City Government has been managing New Orleans for 100 years. Enough said. Choose cash!!!!

PB=$290 Million
Although I would most likely take a lump sum, at this point it would not even matter to me that much. I do not really live in a big area, so I would not have to claim annuity just so everyone thought I did not have all the money yet. But I would want to get my businesses up and running right away, and the lump sum pay out would be far more than I would ever need. Both payout versions have their advantages however, and I believe it is always a personal jugdment call, not a universal one. Dependin
