The regime of apartheid in South Africa, under which nonwhites were systematically oppressed and deprived of their rights, is remembered as one of the worst crimes against humanity of the 20th century.
Despite a growing international movement to topple apartheid in the 1980s, President Ronald Reagan maintained a close alliance with a South African government that was showing no signs of serious reform. And the Reagan administration demonized opponents of apartheid, most notably the African Na

State lotteries continue to fight back against a January Department of Justice reversal of its interpretation of the Wire Act, threatening every form of online gambling in the country.

Pa. Lottery's new keno game gets a lot of play
The Pennsylvania Lottery's new keno game tickets have been selling like gangbusters since debuting at the beginning of the month, lottery spokesman Gary Miller said.
Since May 1, the lottery took in $2.7 million in keno sales and players have already won more than $1.8 million in prizes, Miller said.
About 9,400 retailers statewide sell keno tickets. About 900 bars and restaurants have big screen monitors to play the keno game and that number continues to grow every day, he said. The gamin

State Lottery Advice to Winners
I cut and paste the advice printed on the Illinois Lottery website below the dotted lines. I have highlighted the words of advice they give to anyone winning over $1 million. In my opinion, that is absolutely terrible advice! Personally, when I win, I will not even tell my mom because that would be the same as calling your entire address book, as was portrayed in the movie Lottery Ticket. What do you think LP?

Lottery vending machines in Kansas may depend on whether lawmakers show up Monday
Your ability to buy lottery tickets from vending machines in Kansas may depend on how many lawmakers show up for the ceremonial last day of the session Monday.
A bill allowing the Kansas Lottery to use vending machines to sell tickets was vetoed by Gov. Sam Brownback last week.
The Legislature approved House Bill 2313 earlier this month with margins far greater than the two-thirds needed to override the veto. The House passed the bill 98-19; the Senate passed it 34-4.
But because the fi

Turmoil: Connecticut Lottery interim CEO quits
Frank Farricker, the Connecticut Lottery Corp.'s board chairman and interim CEO, resigned from both unpaid but influential positions Monday after drawing heavy criticism during a legislative inquiry into lottery officials' handling of the fraud-plagued 5 Card Cash lottery game.
Saying that he hopes to help the lottery agency by ceasing any further distractions, Farricker wrote to the quasi-public agency's general counsel, Matthew Stone, and said he was quitting immediately.

Vermont paying $8,000 per month on unused lottery machines
Since last June, 25 lottery machines leased by the state of Vermont have gathered cobwebs in storage unplugged and unused at a cost of $8,000 a month.
That means the state has paid $72,000 in fees for nothing. And the tab is still mounting. Neither the governor nor legislators were happy to hear about the losing proposition.
I don't like that we're wasting money and having these machines sit idly, Gov. Phil Scott said Tuesday. His staff learned about the situation in February while workin

Pennsylvania eyes leap to internet for casinos, lottery
Facing huge deficits, Pennsylvania could become the first state to allow both its casinos and lottery to take its games online in a quest for money from new and younger players.
The state government has a slew of fiscal challenges, made worse by sluggish tax collections and one of the nation's oldest average populations.
A Republican-controlled Legislature trying to avoid a broad tax increase under Democratic Gov. Tom Wolf has instead turned over other rocks in search of alternatives. Ther

Bill allowing Oklahoma Lottery to increase prizes heads to the Senate floor
A bill moving through the Oklahoma statehouse would allow the state's lottery to increase prizes in hopes of generating more dollars for schools and boost the payout to education by about $100 million over the next five years.
For years, lottery officials have asked lawmakers to let them plug more dollars into prizes in hopes it would increase participation and add more money to educational coffers.
And for years, lawmakers balked.
But this year, faced with a huge budget hole, lawmakers
