My thoughts on Massachusetts
The Mass Millions game began in 1987 as a 6/46. It was changed to a 6/49 four years later. The only modification to it since was shifting the draw nights.Whether there should have been a Mass Millions to begin with is debatable (rather than changing Megabucks, which was a 6/36 and is now a 6/42.) Massachusetts, if it wanted to keep Mass Millions around this long, should have included a cash option, or perhaps replace both Megabucks and Mass Millions with a single ja

Powerball Jackpot Climbs to $205 Million
I remember the first 1 million dollar jackpot game I ever played.Back then it seemed like a whole lot of money, and it wasn't that long ago. Now it seems that we have to have 100 MILLION PLUS jackpots to get anybody's. Is that how much people feel they need to make their lives better. As far as annuity vs. cash option I'm on the fence. I can only hope to win,but Idon't play to win. remember to play responsibly. Only play what you can afford to lose.GOOD LUCK TO ALL!

What would you do with your new fortune
First I would take the annuity payments over the 30 years. I would pay off my debt from the car I have early. Get a lawyer to make out a will for my belongings in case of early death occurs. I would put most of the annual check in the savings account I have at the bank. Splurge on a new set of clothes and a new truck. But the one thing I will not do is turn into a handout machine for anybody that wants one. If I waited this long to win they can wait a little bit longer for a handout. I wo

Cash or annuity ?
Its a falsehood that the state lottery pays you a jackpot. They have contracts with large investment and insurance companies. The lottery gives the investment companies a yearly lump sum of money. The money is invested in stocks, bonds, etc. The investment companies pay off the yearly lottery players annuity payment. The investment and insurance firms make a profit, plus the state lottery gets a return on their money.Could the investment firms go bankrupt? Sure, the final obligation to pay falls

Mega Millions Jackpot Soars to $105 Million
What would you do with $105 million? That's what Lottery players everywhere are thinking as they place their order for Friday night's Mega Millions drawing.Lottery officials announced today that no winning ticket correctly matched all six winning numbers -- 08-17-29-32-39 and Gold Mega Ball number 49 -- in the April 6, 2004 Mega Millions drawing, sending the jackpot to an estimated $105 million for Friday's drawing. As the jackpot grows, so does the sale of Mega Millions tickets, said Michigan

Probability of a rollover in PB and MM
The Megamillions jackpots in this particular series of rollovers is slightly larger than the last record breaking (see Jake649's thread) series of rollovers culminating in the $239 million dollar jackpot. Even so, the series now underway is closely tracking the previous run, about $2,000,000 annuity dollars greater on each rollover. This is way probably premature, and very loose, but the probability that the $239 jackpot will be matched is very approximately about 17% over all. The probability

Probability of a rollover in PB and MM
The Megamillions jackpot for March 19, 2004 has rolled over again. The annuity jackpot has risen from $36 million to $43 million. The size of the cash value jackpot has risen from $21.9 million to $26.2 million. This implies the lottery is expecting about 13.5 million sales on this draw. The probability that jackpot will roll over again on Tuesday is 90%. The probability of there being one winner is 9%. The probabiliyt of two winners is about 0.5% and the probability of three winners is 0.

Mass Millions Won

At what jackpot amount did the expected payout become greater than 1, taking into account the annuity and about 32% in taxes? Is there any other lottery approaching a positive expected return? When I

Probability of a rollover in PB and MM
prob987, thanks for your intelligent posts. Do you use the following formula for your sales estimate?(New ESTIMATED cash jackpot - Previous ACTUAL cash jackpot) / (Average percentage of sales allocated to jackpot)?= $(50.2 - 43.5) million / 0.32669= 20,508,739Note that MUSL usually overestimates the jackpot/sales slightly. The site you bookmarked updates the ACTUAL cash and annuity jackpots by the next day.For example, last night's cash jackpot turned out to be $43.5 million instead of MUSL's in

Final Mega Millions Tally: $239 Million
When the winner of the U.S. Mega Millions Lottery drawing comes forward they will get $239 million instead of the advertised $230 million Friday top prize.Virginia lottery officials Monday said the jackpot was actually $9 million more because of strong ticket sales during the hour leading up to the Feb. 20 drawing. One jackpot-winning ticket was purchased in Stephens City, Va., with all five winning numbers: 01-12-20-21-30 and the gold Mega Ball, 24. As if $230 million wasn't enough, said Virgin
