S.C. Lottery sales up by 3 percent; Powerball sales down
It's early yet, but the multi-state lottery game Mega Millions has not sent lottery ticket sales shooting through the roof in South Carolina.
Overall, sales are up about 3 percent. But sales for the state's other multi-state game Powerball are down.
For roughly its first month of operation in South Carolina, the Mega Millions jackpot game had sales of $2.3 million, according to state lottery figures, as South Carolinians got their first crack at a second, high-sweepstakes game.

Oklahoma Lottery gets mixed financial review
Oklahoma gets a larger share of the take than most states do, but its net revenue lags
Oklahoma squeezes a better return from its lottery than most states do from theirs, but it might get more if it loosened some rules, U.S. Census Bureau data suggest.
Oklahoma ranks high in the percentage of lottery proceeds netted for government use, but it's low in actual lottery sales and dollars netted, according to information gathered by the Census Bureau as part of its annual survey of state govern

Fired lottery chief files $9M lawsuit
Wrongful dismissal suit calls the decision to fire former CEO McDougald 'severe and unjustified'
The fired chief executive of the Ontario Lottery and Gaming Corporation is seeking $9 million from taxpayers in a wrongful dismissal suit for her lost $400,000-a-year job, sources say.
Kelly McDougald, dumped last week over widespread expense account irregularities by staff at the Crown agency including one employee's $30 car wash without an official receipt has filed a notice in a case that, c

Arkansas voters get first lottery-only proposal
Arkansas banned lotteries even before state lawmakers determined how to properly pronounce the state's name.
The 1874 ban held through the era of Hot Springs' illegal casinos and their destruction at the hands of sledgehammer-wielding state troopers nearly a century later. In the time since, attempts to legalize a government-run lottery always included bringing back casino games or something else just as unpalatable for a state squarely in the nation's Bible Belt.
Now, though, a proposal b

Illinois House approves privatizing state lottery
Illinois would raise $10 billion for building roads and schools by privatizing its state-run lottery for half a century under a plan the House approved Wednesday night.
After years of resisting, Speaker Michael Madigan and his House Democrats approved turning the lottery over to a private vendor because Gov. Rod Blagojevich and the Legislature have never agreed on another way to pay for a statewide construction program.
The House also voted to restore some of the painful budget cuts Gov. R

Colorado Lottery director to retire
After 4 years on the job, Margaret Peggy Gordon is retiring as director of the Colorado Lottery.
Gordon, who formally made the announcement on Tuesday, said her final day on the job will be June 30, the last day of the state's fiscal year.
When she gets up on July 1, the first thing she plans to do is buy a Lottery ticket, which she's barred from doing as an employee.
The average length of stay for a Lottery director is 18 months, and I'm at 4 years, so I think that's pretty good, s

£10 million lottery winner blows fortune, in debt
When hospital porter John McGuinness won a 10 million (US$19.5 million) British National Lottery jackpot, he thought his good fortune would never end.
Eleven years later, he is deep in debt, looking for a job and applying for public housing.
Some say it's all because he accepted an invitation to join the board of a football (British soccer) club.
Thanks largely to a disastrous 4 million investment in the lowly Scottish side Livingston FC, McGuinness, 44, owes more than 2 million and is

N.Y. Gov. wants to privatize lottery
New York may try to cash in on the future its lucrative lottery as a way to create a permanent education fund, and Wall Street is interested in taking the bet.
The stakes are high for everyone, from students who could get better education to poor communities that might see more grocery money scratched away.
For state government, a long-term leasing for part of the lottery and part of its profits to a private investor for 30 or 40 years could attract a massive upfront payment, perhaps in th

Indiana Gov. wants to sell lottery
As details continued to leak out Wednesday about Indiana Gov. Mitch Daniels' plan to privatize the Hoosier Lottery, reaction from area lawmakers was less than encouraging.
Daniels is expected to unveil the proposal which would likely raise money for higher education at 11 a.m. today.
Wells County Republican Rep. Jeff Espich was briefed on the idea a few weeks ago along with other key lawmakers.
His understanding of the plan was to entice a private entity to run the lottery in exchan

Another Gamble for Online Betting
Legal wrangling in the U.S. is clouding the prospects for the industry world-wide
Two recent arrests of online-gambling executives in the U.S. are drawing attention to a spirited but so far unsuccessful effort in Washington to clarify the legal status of Internet gambling and resolve the political and legal issues of regulating it.
Earlier this month, Peter Dicks, at the time nonexecutive chairman of Sportingbet PLC, Britain's largest publicly traded Internet-gambling company, was arrested
